UNDER 16’s STUN LEAGUE LEADERS

WELLINGTON U 16’s 2 BRIDGWATER RHODE LANE U 16’s 0

Wellington under 16’s stunned the league leaders, by winning at the rec’ on Sunday afternoon, in the Tony Pryce Youth League. The Bridgwater side arrived late due to the Taunton Marathon, and when they did arrive, could only field 10 players. Wellington, themselves with only the bare 11, were a match for their high flying visitors in every area, and were in debited to players playing out of position, due to the absence of 4 regular defenders, and can be mighty chuffed with a clean sheet. The match was open for the first 20 minutes, without their being any real goal threat, then what looked like a serious injury to a visiting attacker, meant a 30 minute delay, and the game finally restarting, with a reduced 30 minute each way timescale, and Rhode lane playing on with 9 men. Wellington then made the two-man advantage tell, when a Ricky Morrey-Jones shot came back off the bar, and Ross Wooldridge was on hand to poke the rebound home. The Bridgwater side mustered a 10th man to begin the second half, and with the slope in their favour, looked to boss the game, but The Tangerines defended stoutly in numbers, and never really looked like surrendering the lead. The hosts should probably should have doubled their lead, when Elliot Reeves spurned a good chance, but as Rhode Lane committed more men forward, the three points were secured, when Man-of-the-Match, Wooldridge grabbed his and Welly’s second. The boy’s can now look forward to the visit on Wednesday of Bishops Lydeard, to see if they can seal their 3rd consecutive victory.

PLEASE MEET AT THE REC AT 5.15PM WEDNESDAY TO PUT UP NETS READY FOR 6PM K.O.

Under 16’s Shine Under the Lights

WELLINGTON U16’s 2 WEMBDON U16’s 1

Wellington Under 16’s produced probably their best performance in 2 years, to gain a deserved victory, under the lights at Wellington playing field, last Wednesday, in the Tony Pryce Youth League. Kicking down the slope, the home side had slightly more of the play early on, and had 2 good penalty shouts turned down, firstly when Ross Wooldridge was upended, and then what looked like a clear hand, but neither saw favour with the referee. Ben Evett had 2 shots at breaking the deadlock, and Adrian Salisbury probably should have done better when clean through after 20 minutes. The first goal came on the half hour, when Macca Campbell’s’ first touch after coming on as a sub, was to thread to Salisbury, who this time bagged his 8th of the season. The visitors then had their best spell of the half, but Ross Clark, and his new central defensive partner Saul Hawkins looked really solid, and Luke Vernon in the home goal, was only called on once to parry a well-struck drive. The Bridgwater club came out with all guns blazing early in the second period, and Wellington were indebted to the post as early as the 3rd minute for keeping their lead, and they had several other opportunities, but couldn’t quite hit the target. The Tangerines doubled their lead, when a Connor Sellick cross, landed at the feet of Evett, who wasn’t to be outdone, to record his 8th of the campaign, and give the large partisan crowd further encouragement. The game went into the last quarter on a knife-edge, when the visitors did reduce the arrears, and set about looking for an equaliser. The game became physical, and a visiting striker was cautioned for raising his hands at Evett, and then a wild lunge at Sellick, cause a mass fracas, and reduced the visitors to ten men, with the certain straight red that followed. Wellington took the heat out of the game for the last few minutes, and saw out a deserved victory. The management and boys of the Under 16’s would like to thank Colin Waller, and the club for allowing the floodlit game to be played, and also thanks to Helen and Clare for providing refreshments afterwards.

Wellington Under 16’s taught a lesson, by 9 man champions

WELLINGTON U 16’s 2 TAUNTON NORTH YOUTH U 16’s 8

Although only arriving with 9 players, the county cup finalists, ran out comfortable winners, at a wintry rec, on Sunday afternoon, in the Tony Pryce Youth League. Wellington, themselves with only the bare 11, were indebted to stand-in ‘keeper Jake Mason, for keeping the score to single figures. The talented Taunton side, played neat football, on a leaden pitch, made worse by persistent sleet, and were 3 up inside 6 minutes, and added a 4th halfway through the first period, which left the home supporters fearing the flood gates would open. The Wellington boys never gave up, and even a 5th and 6th, either side of the interval, couldn’t dampen the commitment or effort. The hosts finally got on the score sheet, when a Sam Scarlett free kick, was spilled by the visiting ‘keeper, and Macca Campbell and Connor Sellick, both slid in to claim the final touch, though we have registered it to Campbell. Even kicking up the slope, against the prevailing snow, and with a 2 man deficit, the champions elect, still had enough class to add a further 2 goals to the tally, before a second consolation, again claimed by sellick, when his cross was helped into his own net by a Taunton north defender. Wellington next have 3 games in a week, beginning with Sundays trip to Bishops Lydeard.

DOUBLE OVER BASEMENT BOYS

BISHOPS HULL U16’s 1 WELLINGTON U16’s 5

Wellington completed their first double of the season, with a convincing win, over bottom of the table Bishops Hull, on Sunday afternoon, in the Tony Pryce Youth League. The visitors were fastest out of the blocks, with both Ross Wooldridge and Adrian Salisbury going close within the first 5 minutes. The deadlock was broken on 6 minutes with Salisbury providing the cross for Wooldridge to shoot home, and within a minute, the league was doubled, with Salisbury again providing the cross, this time for Sam Scarlett to score. This should have been the catalyst to put the game to bed, but it only spurred the hosts into action, who deservedly reduced the arrears, half way through the first period, when their forward was allowed to waltz through the middle and shoot past the on-rushing Luke Vernon in the Wellington goal. After the break, The Tangerines were much more on the front foot, and bossed the game for large periods, and Salisbury got his 1st and Wellingtons 3rd goal, a quarter of an hour in, when he rounded the keeper to slot home. The game was then put beyond the Taunton side, when a firmly struck cross from Curtis Rowlands, was deflected into his own net by a Bishops Hull defender, and the scoring was completed, by man-of-the-match Salisbury, when he pounced on a static defence, to shoot home from a narrow angle. The boys will need to take this form into next weekend’s game, when they travel to high riding Westonzoyland (Sunday 2.30pm K.O.).

New Year – But still no Resolution!

MINEHEAD U 16’s 5 WELLINGTON U16’s 1

Wellington Under 16’s put in a below par performance at Minehead on Sunday afternoon in the Tony Pryce Youth league, and ultimately came away well beaten. Whether it was the enforced break due to the bad weather, or players still in the Christmas mode, but whichever, they were 2nd best all over the park, and can have no complaints about the score line.

The warnings were there from as early as the 4th minute, when Luke Vernon, in the visitors goal, had to make a sharp save, and then captain Ross Clarke had to be alert to head a goal line clearance on the ¼ hour. Pressure finally told on 21 minutes, when a fine cross was headed home, but the Seasiders could only hold onto the lead for 60 seconds, as a long ball forward found Ben Evett, who scored his 7th of the season. A crazy 4 minutes was then concluded, as another Minehead cross was converted, and the lead was extended, just before the break, when a trip in the box, was duly converted from the resultant spot kick.

Wellingtons’ form and effort improved after the interval, but they couldn’t really maintain any real pressure or fashion any openings, and the hosts were as good as out of sight with another goal 15 minutes in. The scoring was completed late on with a Minehead 5th, which was probably no more than they deserved. The Wellington youngsters now have 2 weeks to regroup before they go on their travels again, to basement boys Bishops Hull.

Under 16’s lose out to unbeaten Elmore

Wellington U 16’s 1 Elmore U 16’s 4

Wellington Under 16’s put up a much better performance, but ultimately it was not enough, against Elmore, who boasted a 100% record, when they arrived at the Rec, on Sunday, in the Tony Pryce, Taunton Youth League. Apart from the first 10 minutes, and five minutes straight after the interval, when all 4 were conceded, Wellington fought hard, and never gave an inch to their Tiverton visitors. The muddy pitch, was partly to blame, as within 60 seconds of the start, a soft shot, slid through to nestle in the corner, and within 10 minutes, an Elmore forward sprinted clear, to chip the onrushing Luke Vernon. Kicking up the slope, in the first period, the object was to get through to half time, without the visitors being out of sight, and this was largely done with a great spirit and team effort. Sam Scarlett switched to play as a lone striker, which gave the hosts an outlet, and this nearly came to fruition on the half hour as his shot went just wide. Turning around the boys had high hopes of getting into the game, with the slope in their favour, but as has happened so often, within 5 minutes, 1 soft goal, and a superb strike left them 4 down. In pervious weeks, this could have meant ‘meltdown’ but the effort continued, and Scarlett got a well-deserved goal, half way through the second period, and the hosts pushed on in search of further goals. Elmore continued to play attractive football, and Wellington continued to try to close down, but some over zealous tackling, led Saul Hawkins to get cautioned, and the game threatened to bubble over, but the referee did a splendid job, and the boys can be pleased with their overall performance. Next week they visit fellow strugglers Minehead, and will be hopeful of bringing some points back with them

Sleighed by the Dragons

Wellington U 16 0 Galmington Dragons U16 5

Wellington under 16 put in their most lack-lustre performance of the season, as they were soundly beaten by their Taunton neighbours on Sunday afternoon, in the Tony Pryce Taunton youth league. A heavy pitch was never going to make for attractive football, and kicking up the slope in the first half, the hosts were always going to have to defend effectively, to keep the visitors in check. Wellington bossed possession for the first 10 minutes, but a mix up allowed Galmington to steal in and score with their first meaningful attack, and 10 minutes later, their next foray into home territory resulted in the same outcome. On the half hour, The Dragons broke down the right, and a soft cross was met by the unfortunate Macca Campbell, who could only ‘pass’ into his own net. Wellington never really recovered, and even with the slope in their favour, couldn’t fashion any clear-cut chances, and 2 more goals, either side of the hour mark, put any chance of a fight back, firmly out of the question. Wellington tried hard in the last half hour to make some in-roads, and they did manage to hit the woodwork, but even a consolation, could not be found. The boys will have to seriously up their game as the next two Sundays bring unbeaten Elmore, and table toppers Taunton North Youth to the Rec’.

UNDONE AT WEMBDON

WEMBDON U 16’s 2 WELLINGTON U 16’s 1

Wellington lost by the odd goal in 3, at Bridgwater on Sunday afternoon, in the Tony Pryce Youth League. They will be disappointed, as the amount of possession they enjoyed, particularly in the first half, should have got them at least a point and probably 3. Early exchanges were even, but a long punt forward for Wembdon after 10 minutes, fell kindly for their striker to stroke home. Their second, only 5 minutes later, was a complete fluke, as an ‘up and under’ from the hosts winger, sailed over everyone, including the Wellington ‘keeper, Luke Vernon, and bounced over the line. The visitors then went on the offensive, for a large part of the half, and Sam Scarlett was first to try his luck, with a shot, which went wide. They were then given a lifeline back into the match on the half hour, when Connor Sellick was held in the box, and Ben Evett stepped up to send the ‘keeper the wrong way from the resultant spot kick. Wellington had more chances before the break, with Curtis Rowland hitting the post, and a goalmouth melee, which wouldn’t fall kindly to the boys in orange. Wembdon started the 2nd period with much more purpose, and fashioned the better openings, but the back line marshalled by Sellick held firm. Sellick, then went forward to take a free kick on the edge of the box, and saw a deflection send it against the bar, and away to safety. As Welly’ committed more men forward in search of an equaliser, the game became stretched, and were indebted themselves to the woodwork and last ditch defending to keep them in the game. The goal wouldn’t come, and the boys must look forward to a home game next week, against fellow strugglers Bridgwater Wolves, to get them back to winning ways

UNDER 16’S SLUMP AS BRIDGWATER ‘RHODE’ OFF WITH THE POINTS

BRIDGWATER RHODE LANE U 16’s 4 WELLINGTON U 16’s 0

Wellington Under 16’s put in a lack lustre performance, at Bridgwater Rhode Lane on Sunday afternoon, in the Tony Pryce Youth League. The boys were under pressure from the outset, and were fortunate not to fall behind, as early as the 7th minute, when the hosts fashioned an opening, which was hammered just wide. Luke Vernon, in the visitor’s goal, made a good save on 18 minutes, but was powerless with the rebound, as the home side were quicker to the ball to slot home. It was a poor performance all over the park, except for man-of-the-match Saul Hawkins in the ‘engine room’, who ensured the Bridgwater outfit, didn’t have everything their own way. It took 28 minutes for Wellington to force an opening, which was a long-range effort from Ben Evett, which sadly sailed harmlessly wide. The first half was drawing to a close, when Rhode Lane doubled their advantage, by waltzing through unchallenged. The second period was a largely scrappy affair, which Wellington spent mostly on the back foot, and any chance of getting into the game was extinguished, when a 6th penalty of the season was conceded, which was duly converted. The work rate couldn’t be faulted, but there was no end product, and as the game entered the final minute, Rhode Lane made one last thrust forward to complete a 4-0 rout. The boys will need to pick themselves up quickly, as they travel to Bridgwater again next Sunday, to play Wembdon Under 16’s.

Two Hat-Tricks in 9 goal spree

Wellington U16’s 9 Bishops Hull U16’s 1

Adrian Salisbury and Ben Evett, both scored hat-tricks, as Wellington U16’s put 9 passed their Taunton visitors, at a sodden rec, on Sunday afternoon, in the Tony Pryce Youth league. Kicking up the slope, Wellington were quickest out the blocks, with a shot on 2 minutes from Josh Woodgate, parried wide, but 4 minutes later Josh had better luck, when his strike opened the Scoring. Woodgate then became provider on 14 minutes with a through ball which Adrian Salisbury slotted home, and within a further 10 minutes, Salisbury had doubled his tally, this time with a through ball from Ben Evett. Wellington were bossing the game, and in particular man-of-the match Curts Rowlands were outstanding, and really should have converted more of their chances, with Salisbury missing some good chances to get his hat-trick before the break. The home side were then caught with a sucker punch, as players were piling forward, and neglecting their defensive duties, allowing Bishops Hull to score and get a foothold in the game just before the break. After the interval, the pitch became a mud bath, making neat football impossible, and a fourth goal from substitute Ricky Morrey-Jones seemed to knock all the fight out of the opposition. Salisbury duly completed his hat-trick, then Evett got in on the act with a brace and Ross Wooldridge added an eighth with a back-heel. Evett sealed his hat-trick and Wellington’s ninth, before the end, with the weather again closing in.

CUP EXIT FOR UNDER 16’s

WELLINGTON UNDER 16’s 2 TAUNTON NORTH YOUTH UNDER 16’s 6

Wellington Under 16’s slipped to a disappointing defeat, in the Tony Pryce Youth League knock out cup, on Sunday afternoon. The home side were quicker out the blocks though, and took only 90 seconds to register on the score sheet, when Ben Evett slotted a flick on by ‘Nobby’ Wooldridge, home. Evett had a chance to double the advantage on 10 minutes, but with this chance gone, the visitors roared into life, to level on 12 minutes, and then deservedly go in front only 4 minutes later. The rest of the first period, was largely a scrappy affair, with home ‘Keeper Luke Vernon, saving several goal bound efforts, but he was powerless 5 minutes before the interval, as a third was added. The second half was much the same as the first and the game was over as a match, when 2 headed efforts left the Taunton side leading 5-1 with a full half hour remaining. Wellington then had a decent spell of possession, and reduced the deficit when Adrian Salisbury fired home, only for the visitors to restore a 4-goal cushion 5 minutes later. The boys have a week off this Sunday, and will be looking forward to getting back to league action, on 4th November when they entertain bottom of the table Bishops Hull with a 2.30pm kick off.

FIRST VICTORY . . .. AND 4 GOALS TO BOOT

BRIDGWATER WOLVES U16 1 WELLINGTON U16 4

Wellington had a worthwhile trip up the M5 on Sunday afternoon, in the Tony Pryce Taunton youth league. The visitors were quick out the blocks, and it took only 4 minutes to get their first shot away, with Elliot Reeves firing over, and shortly afterwards, had a corner, which Nathan Roberts only just failed to convert. It wasn’t all one-way traffic, and stand in ‘keeper Curtis Rowlands, had to be sharp to turn a goal bound effort against the bar. The Welly midfield, were seeing plenty of the ball, and shots from Ben Evett, and Adrian Salisbury, only just failed to break the deadlock. The opening came on the half hour, when Salisbury turned provider, with a pinpoint cross, which man-of-the-match Ross Wooldridge nodded home. The second period started with the hosts on top, and Rowlands had to be alert, early on to tip over, but he was powerless to stop the ‘Wolves’ equaliser 12 minutes in, and the home side threatened to take control. The next goal was always going to be important, and it came courtesy of a deflected Macca Campbell strike, and the Wellington nerves were settled. The game became stretched and further efforts from Evett and Ricky Morrey-Jones nearly added to the tally. The game was made safe in the last 5 minutes, with goals from Salisbury and Evett, capped a fine team performance, and the Tangerines will hope to take this confidence, into next weeks cup encounter, against the league pace setters Taunton North Youth

NO POINTS. . . .AND STILL NO GOALS

TAUNTON NORTH YOUTH U16 4 WELLINGTON U16 0

Wellington under 16’s are still looking for their 1st point and 1st goal, after going down 4-0 to the table toppers, in the Tony Pryce Taunton Youth league on Sunday afternoon.

Wellington were under pressure from early on, and were thankful of a goal line clearance after only 5 minutes. Man-of-the match Luke Vernon, in the visitors goal, had to be at his brilliant best all afternoon, to keep the scoreline respectable. The hosts headed just wide after 7 minutes, and then rattled the woodwork after 14 and then further saves from Vernon on 18 and 23 minutes frustrated last years champions. The half was heading to a goaless close, when the referee mysteriously added on some 4 or 5 minutes, and the last kick of this ‘extra’ time resulted in a home goal.

This seemed to knock the stuffing out of Welly, who were much slower to the ball in the 2nd period, and allowed the quality of the opposition, to control the game. Further scores resulted on 50 and 55 minutes and another penalty, the 6th conceded this season, after only 17 minutes of the 2nd period resulted in a 4-0 scoreline. Wellington then battled bravely for the rest of the half and had some good possession late on, but still couldn’t find the back of the net.

Wellington hope for better luck, when they travel to fellow strugglers Bridgwater Wolves next Sunday.

WELLINGTON Under 16s are still looking for their first point of the season, after drawing a blank at home to the seasiders, on Sunday afternoon, in the Tony Pryce Youth League.

Wellington, kicking down the slope, were on top for large chunks of the first period, but couldn’t find a way to get the ball in the back of the net. Ben Evett was the first to try his luck, with a free kick on 11 minutes which went just wide, then Sam Scarlett had two more free kicks well saved.

Camped in the visitors' half, the hosts tried all ways to get on the score sheet, and even central defender Ross Clark, tried his luck with a long-range effort, which sailed just over.

As the half drew to a close, the home forwards fashioned several openings, one of which led to a corner, which Scarlet headed against the bar.

The second half was always likely to be more difficult, kicking up the slope, against the wind, and the first real opening fashioned by the visitors, resulted in a corner, which was spilled in the six-yard box. A scramble followed, and the ball ended up poked over the line.

Wellington worked tirelessly, and again the back three of Ross Clarke, Connor Sellick and man-of-the match Elliot Jarman, marshalled their opposite numbers well, but offensively, the ball just wouldn’t fall kindly. Wellington hit the woodwork again, this time by Adrian Salisbury, with seven minutes remaining, and it felt like it wasn’t to be their day.

Wellington then conceded their fifth penalty of the season, but Minehead couldn’t convert, and they were left holding on in a tense finale.

More penalty Woes for Under 16's

Galmington Dragons U16's 1 Wellington U16's 0

For the second week in a row, Wellington conceded 2 penalties, which were ultimately the difference between the 2 sides. The Taunton hosts started brightly, and had a free kick on 8 minutes, which struck the bar, and they also had the lions share of possesion, which the visitors, lead by captain and centre half, Ross Clarke, dealt with comfortably. The first spot kick was conceded on 28 minutes, but a brilliant save, by Wellingtons 'keeper Luke Vernon, kept the score all square at half time. Kicking down the slope The Tangarines hoped to get a foot hold in the game, but a second penalty, conceded 7 minutes in, this time was rifled in, to give Galmington the upper hand. Wellington threw players forward, and worked tirelessly, particularly in midfield, where man-of-the match Ben Evett strived to find an opening, but sadly it was not to be, and Wellington will have to hope next weeks first home fixture, will bring a change of luck.

Two penalties and an own goal!!

Elmore U16 7 Wellington U16 0

Wellington traveled to Devon on Sunday afternoon, in The Tony Pryce, Taunton Youth League, and came away well beaten. The visitors were slow out the blocks, and it took only 4 mins for a long range effort to nestle in the corner. Luke Vernon was called on in the Wellington goal, on several more occaisions, and a good save was needed on 13 minutes to tip around the post. The Tiverton side doubled their advantage on 14 minutes, and 10 minutes later made it 3. The first half scoring was completed on the half hour, when Connor Sellick, unfortunately, turned a corner into his own net. Wellington needed to be sharper early in the 2nd half, and try to be more competitive, but this was undone after only 5 minutes, when a shove in the box, gave the refereee no alternative than to award a spot kick, which was converted. Tired legs were inevitable, with the amount of ground the boys were asked to cover, due to Elmores slick movement, and they scored further goals on 27 and 29 minutes of the second half. Any further breaches were prevented, and a fine penalty save from Luke Vernon just after the half hour, was small comfort from a very dissapointing defeat. The Tangarines can look forward to travelling to face Taunton side Galmington next week, who were also soundly beaten this week.

FINAL FIXTURE ENDS IN DEFEAT

WEMBDON U15’S 3 WELLINGTON U15’S 0

Wellington finished their season, in the Tony Pryce Youth League, with a defeat, at their Bridgwater rivals, but a defeat that was filled with promise for next season. Wellington, travelled without their first choice ‘keeper, but stand in, Curtis Rowlands, made 2 fine saves early on to settle the nerves. Wembdon had a strong wind at their backs in the first period, and on a small pitch, this meant spending long periods camped in the visitors’ half, but strong performances from defensive midfielders Saul Hawkins and Connor Sellick, kept them at bay. The deadlock was broken on 29 minutes, when the ball was not cleared from inside the 6 yd box, and the hosts’striker had an easy conversion. The lead was doubled 2 mins later, when a long throw in was allowed to reach the far post, where it was nodded home. After the interval, with the wind in their favour, Wellington were far more potent in attack, with wide men Sam Scarlet and Ricky Morrey-Jones to the fore. Ben Evett had a fine strike 10 minutes in, which was only just wide, and Adrian Salisbury had a pile driver very well tipped over by the home ‘keeper. Wellington were now committing players forward at every opportunity, in search of goals, which inevitably left gaps in behind, and the Bridgwater side capitalised in the last minute to grab a break away 3rd.

MATCH REPORT

WELLINGTON UNDER 15’S 0 WEMBDON UNDER 15’S 0

Wellington under 15’s final home game of the season, ended goaless, under floodlights, on Thursday evening, in the Tony Pryce Youth League. Wellington, playing down the slope in the first half, matched their opponents in every department, and had the first chance after 9 minutes, when Macca Campbell, had a shot saved. The large crowd inspired the boys, and they nearly had a goal to shout about, when the ball dropped to Ben Evett on 21 minutes, and the first time strike was only just wide. Tom Hawkings joined the action on 24 minutes, replacing the injured Evett, and it was Tom who won a free kick, which Sam Scarlett took, testing the visiting keeper on the half hour. The Bridgwater side were a constant threat, and the game was played in a great spirit, which made the evening a great enjoyment. The Tangarines had one more attack before the break, when Adrian Salisbury was only just out of luck. The game was always going to be more difficult kicking up the slope, in the second period, and Wellington kept up their work rate, to keep the visitors at bay. Wembdon had long spells of possession and pressure, and they thought their pressure had told on 27 minutes, when the ball was slotted home, only for the offside flag to be raised. Wellingtons’ only worthwhile opportunity fell to Salisbury on the half hour, who’s goal bound effort was tipped around the post. The visitors had one more flourish, to try and find a winner, and when one of their forwards placed the ball around the onrushing home keeper Luke Vernon, Ricky Morrey-Jones, flew in from right back, to clear right on the line. The point, which was hard fought, may well, depending on other results, take Wellington up a place to third from bottom, which shoul be just reward, for a fully committed performance.

The under 15 players and managers, would like to thank the club for assisting, to enable the game to be played under lights, and a special thanks to Helen and Clare, for providing food for the boys after the game.

ONE SIDED SCORELINE

WELLINGTON U 15’S 0 MOORS YOUTH U 15’S 6

Wellington U15’s suffered another heavy defeat, on Sunday afternoon, in the Tony Pryce, Youth League, but their play deserved far much more. Wellington took the play to the visitors, during the first 15 minutes, and it was the Tiverton outfit who looked like they were languishing at the foot of the table, rather than their 3rd place position. The home side couldn’t turn their possession into goals, and then to rub salt in their wounds, Moor’s first attack was bundled in from close range. Wellington continued to press, but the ball just wouldn’t fall kindly to Adrian Salisbury up front, and the lead was doubled on 25 minutes, and a 3rd was conceded, just on the half hour. Welly turned around, and with the slope in their favour, looked to make inroads into the deficit, but couldn’t find the space to create any openings, despite good performances from the returning Tom Hawkings, and the solid spine of Connor Sellick, Saul Hawkins, and man-of-the-match Ross Clarke. The visitors scrambled a 4th, 15 minutes into the 2nd period, and with 2 goals in the last 7 minutes, the score didn’t reflect the afternoons match.

BASEMENT BATTLE ENDS IN 6 GOAL THRILLER

BRIDGWATER RHODE LANE U15’s 3 WELLINGTON U15’s 3

Wellington under 15’s ended up sharing the points, in the battle of the bottom 2, in the Tony Price youth league, on a Sunny Sunday afternoon in Bridgwater. Wellington, who started the day 3 points in front of their rivals, took the game to their hosts, in the first fifteen, but still ended up a goal behind, after a direct free kick, flew over everybody to nestle in the top corner. The visitors were only behind for 6 minutes, when Ben Evett, picked the ball up inside the box, to calmly slot home. The entertaining game, produced chances at either end, and good hustling from the Welly forwards forced an error in the home defence, and Macca Campbell was on hand to poke home. The second half started disasterously, as within 25 seconds, all the first half good work was undone, when the Bridgwater side had a corner, which was allowed to be stroked home unchallenged. The home side now had the bit between their teeth, and went in search of more goals, and duly edged in front with a scrappy goal, with a full half hour remaining. The game became an end-to-end encounter, with Evett hitting the post at one end, and Bridgwater, hitting the bar at the other, all within a minute. Wellington were sliding to a disappointing defeat, when just inside the last 10 minutes, the ball dropped to Evett, a full 25 yards out, who struck the sweetest volley, to share the spoils. Another mention must go to Elliot Jarman, who playing his first full season in football, was a tower of strength and commitment, in the middle of the back four.

Improvement Continues

Somerton U15 4 Wellington U15 2

Wellington found further improvement, on Sunday afternoon in the Taunton and District Youth league, at a Sunny but blustery Somerton. The first half was a tight affair, with chances few and far between, and any chances that fell to the hosts, were confidently dealt with, and some good saves again from Luke Vernon in goal. Wellingtons solid formation, with Saul Hawkins and Connor Sellick, breaking up everything in midfield, worked well, until on 25 minutes a long range strike, flew past everyone, and nestled in the top corner. Turning around, with a swirling wind at their backs, the hopes were high for the visitors, but the achilees heel returned as within a minute of the restart, a second goal left an uphill struggle. Within 5 minutes a 3rd home goal, looked to have the match wrapped up, but Wellington now came alive, and looked a match for the opposition. Man-of-the-match Sam Scarlett, swapped wings and was getting plenty of joy down the right flank, and it was him who got the visitors on the scoresheet, with a 30 yard freekick and with still over 20 minutes left, Wellington went in search of more goals. The game became more open, and Somerton grabbed a fourth on the half hour, and Macca Campbell then reduced the arrears with 9 minutes remaining. The Tangarines played the last quarter with fire in their belly, and showed with the commitment, which if continued for a full 80 minutes, will surely see them get their just rewards.

Beaten but not bowed

Wellington U15’s 1 Taunton North Youth 7

Wellington Under 15’s can be proud of their performance, in the Taunton and district Youth League on Sunday afternoon. Although conceding 7, the commitment was as high as it has been all season, against the table toppers, who have been regularly knocking in double figure scores this season. Kicking up the slope, Welly were sharp into the tackle, and the visitors only managed 1 goal in the first 25 minutes, and only 3 by half time, with the slope in their favour. Wellington’s back 4 were marshalled well, by captain and man of the match Ross Clarke, and ably supported by Elliot Jarman, Saul Hawkins, Stephen Hall and ‘Keeper, Luke Vernon, who were all on top of their game. The Taunton side, continued to play excellent football, and took only 6 minutes of the 2nd half before converting another chance, and Wellington were fearful of an onslought. Nowadays, the Tangarines are made of sterner stuff, and got on the scoresheet themselves, when Kurtis Robins stabbed home to head into the last 15 only 4-1 down. Tired legs, led to a more open game, which then let in the visitors for 3 quick goals in an 8 minute spell, and ultimately a heavy defeat, but a defeat which the hosts could leave with their heads held high.

Still no win on the road

Minehead U15's 3 Wellington U15's 1

Wellington under 15's are still looking for their first away victory, after a hard fought match in Minehead, on Sunday afternoon, in The Tony Pryce Youth League. The seasiders had marginally the better of a tight opening, and it took a disputed free kick on 18 minutes, for the hosts to fashion an opening, when the ball dropped kindly for an attacker, who made no mistake. Worse was to follow, as within 2 minutes, a hopeful punt upfield, was allowed to bounce, and the visitors static defence, were powerless to act as the ball was prodded home. Wellington needed a quick reply, and it came from an unlikely sourse, Connor Sellick's right boot!, when a 25 yard strike, nestled in the top corner, giving hope for the second half. Wellington found themseves under pressure, early in the second period, but good goalkeeping from Luke Vernon, and a man-of-the-match performance, from Saul Hawkins at right back, kept the hosts at bay. The next opening, fell to the visitors, and this time, Connor's more conventional left boot, was only just wide, from a free kick, and hopes were high of getting something from the game. As the half wore on, Welly had to commit more men forward, which left Minehead with more space to attack, and one such attack, got a forward free in the box who was upended, and the resultant penalty was rifled home, leaving a final 3 - 1 scoreline.

BISHOPS LYDEARD U15's 10 WELLINGTON U15's 0

Wellington U15's suffered another heavy defeat on their travels, on Sunday afternoon, in the Taunton and District Youth League. The hosts were much quicker and stronger all over the park, in the first period, and only good goalkeeping from man-of-the-match Luke Vernon and some spirited defending, prevented a cricket score in this one-sided encounter. The visitors had several scares early on, and the deadlock was broken on 11 minutes, when a Lydeard striker was given the freedom of the 6 yard box, to fire home. It was always going to be a struggle kicking up the slope, and a further goal on 19 minutes was no more than the village side deserved. A difficult task was made impossible, when 3 goals around the half hour mark, left a 0-5 half time scoreline. The Tangarines, hoped for a better performance kicking down the slope, but conceding after only 30 seconds of the restart, left an uphill struggle for the last 40 minutes. The players gave their all, but further goals on 15, 25 and 30 minutes of the second period, and then double figures were reached in the last minute, which left a miserable trek back home. The boys now have 2 weeks to regroup, before their next fixture, away to Minehead, on 12 February.

Wellington Rue Missed Chances

Galmington U 15's 3 Wellington U 15's 0

Wellington were made to pay for their missed chances, in The Taunton and District Youth League on Sunday afternoon. The first half was a tight affair, with the hosts' tall players causing problems at set pieces and corners. The visitors weathered the storm and should really have gone ahead, when Adrian Salisbury missed an opportunity, with an empty goal in front of him. A solid performance, by a central pairing of Ross Clark and man-of-the-match Elliot Jarman, kept the hosts tightly marshalled, and a tireless work-rate from midfielders, Connor Sellick and Saul Hawkins led to few further scares. Wellington had two more guilt edged opportunites, which unfortunately were'nt taken, so they turned around with a goaless first period. The Taunton side, kicking down the slope, were much more offensive, and 2 early chances should have given The Tangarines the wake up call. The first goal was scored after 18 minutes, and then tiring legs and Galmington's good play resulted in two more breaches on 26 and 32 minutes, gave a slightly one sided look to the scoreline. Wellington were also indebted to good goalkeeping from Luke Vernon, keeping out several more goal bound efforts, but the overall feeling was the result would probably have been different had the first half opportunities been taken.

New Year Hangover

Wellington U 15's 0 Westonzoyland U 15's 7

Wellington U15's started the new year, with a heavy defeat, at a sunny rec on Sunday afternoon, in the Taunton and District Youth league. The writing was on the wall, from as early as the first minute, when the high flying visitors' first attack, resulted in an easy finish, with the hosts' defenders unable to challenge. Wellington, who were weakened by injuries and unavailability, were second to the ball all over the park, and even with the benefit of the slope in the first 45 minutes, failed to create any worthwhile openings. 'Zoyland doubled their advantage on 13 minutes, and added further goals on 20 and 26 minutes, and even though the home side were not short on endeavor and commitment, a fifth goal just before half time, left a mountain to climb. The heavy pitch was never going to allow a flowing game, but the visitors did their best to play football on the deck, and were rewarded with 2 second half strikes, which left a final 0-7 scoreline as probably a fair reflection of the game. Lets hope the new year hangover, is firmly put to bed before travelling to face Galmington next Sunday.

Kicking down the slope, but against the wind Wellington looked nervous early on against a team who were 1 place and 1 point behind the hosts at the start of play. The deadlock was broken on 27 minutes when man of the match, Connor Sellick's free kick was spilled by the visiting Keeper and Macca Campbell pounced to prod home. The lead was doubled a couple of minutes later when Adrian Salisbury, picked up a ball from Curtis Rowlands and stormed forward to rifle home. This seem to settled the tangarines, who had several more chances to increase the advantage, but had to settle for a 2 goal cushion at half time. Every player must be congratulated, for their commitment, especially having to play players out of position, due to the unfortunate leg break sustained to Nathan Roberts in the last aborted fixture. The back five again excelled, with Josh Woodgate filling in at left back, and Saul Hawkins having a spell at right back. Offensively, Wellington were more mobile, with wide men, Sam Scarlett and Ricky Morrey-Jones more evident and some deft touches from Ben Evett, one of which led to Salisbury getting his second midway through the half. The match was then marred, by Bridgwater disputing every ref' decision, who had to speak at length with both visiting supporters and players which left an unsavoury feel to the match. On the restart, Salisbury had time to complete his hat-trick when put in by Campbell, and Rhode Lane grabbed a consolation right on full time, when the hosts failed to deal with a corner.

Back Down To Earth

MOORS YOUTH U15 4 WELLINGTON U 15 0

Wellington were brought down to earth, by top of the table Moors, in sunny Tiverton on Sunday afternoon. Following 2 consecutive victories, Wellington had hoped to continue their good form, but the skillful hosts put paid to that as early as the second minute when they took the lead. A difficult afternoon, played on western league Elmore towns' pitch, was assured when the league was doubled on 16 minutes, and the travelling supporters were fearing the worst. The visitors began to grow into the game, and solid performances at the back from Elliot Jarman and Connor Sellick, who appeared to have most of the Tiverton mud splattering his body, kept the visitors at bay. The energy sapping pitch took its toll, as slick passing and moving by the home said broke through the stout defences again, just as the half time whistle blew. Turning around, the Tangarines hoped for a better start, but as has happened so many times this season, Wellington conceded within 90 seconds of the restart, and at 4-0 damage limitation was the best that could be hoped for. Their workrate never dropped, and man-of-the match Ben Evett, must be given credit for covering every blade of grass, as did many others, who worked tirelessly to stem the tide. Both teams began to fade, as the soggy pitch cut up, so gaps appeared and Wellington had their best spell, with some surging runs from Sam Scarlett, one of which gave the visitors a clear cut chance, which unfortunately Adrian Salisbury put wide. A stout 2nd half performance ensured they didn't concede again, and the boys must be congratulated for their commitment against a side who will more than likely be league champions.

SWEET REVENGE

WELLINGTON U15'S 2 SOMERTON U15'S 1

Wellington gained revenge, for a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the visitors, only 3 weeks previous, with a hard fought victory on Sunday afternoon, in the Tony Pryce Taunton Youth League. Somerton started the brighter, and looked every inch, a team who were joint top at the start of play, with only 1 defeat, although it was the hosts who had the first chance, when a Ben Evett free kick was just too high. The deadlock was broken,on 8 minutes when a visitors move was finished with a crisp finish, and a long first half kicking up hill looked on the cards. The home team, though, are made of sterner stuff now, and a resolute back 5, and particularly man-of-the-match, home 'keeper Luke Vernon, kept everything out that was thrown at them. After the interval, Welly were a yard quicker, and with the slope in their favour, wide men, Sam Scarlett and Ricky Morrey-Jones got to see more of the ball, and Callum Richardson was much more prominent in 'the engine room'. The equaliser came after a formation change, which left 3 at the back to get more players into advanced positions, and a pin point pass from Evett found Scarlett who slotted home. An identical move only 2 minutes later ended up with the same outcome, so the hosts entered the last quarter 2-1 up. Although Somerton went all out for an equliser, the Tangarines defended stoutly, and probably should have gone further in front, when another Evett through ball found Scarlett, who's hat-trick was only denied by the post.

Match Report

FIRST VICTORY

Holway U15's 2 Wellington U15's 3

Wellington secured their first 3 points of the season, with a hard fought win at a sunny Blackbrook Pavillion on Sunday afternoon. The visitors started brightly, and looked far more assured than their bottom of the league position would suggest, and it was no surprise to see them go in front, when a through ball from Adrian Salisbury, found Callum Richardson who made no mistake. It took only 9 minutes for Welly to double their lead, but this time it was Salisbury who showed composure in front of goal, to cooly slot home. The Taunton side then had a spell of possession, and 4 minutes before the break, reduced the arrears with a well taken strike. Earlier in the season, this may well have caused panic, but not today, as within a minute, the 2 goal cushion was restored by a Ben Evett curling shot, which gave the home 'keeper no chance. The second period was a very different affair, with the home side far more dominant, and Welly 2nd to most challenges. The visitors were indebted to another solid back 4 performance, especially Elliot Jarman, and 3 saves from Luke Vernon were right out of the top drawer. A final 5 jittery minutes were assured when Holway breached the tangarine defences, but Wellington held firm to leap frog their hosts in the league table.

CUP EXIT

Wellington U15's 2 Somerton U15's 5

Wellington were knocked out of the cup on Sunday afternoon, but left a sunny rec with their heads held high. The first quarter of the match was a tight affair, with few chances, and Wellington matched their opponents, who had won 3 of their 4 league games this season. The deadlock was broken on 20 minutes, when the hosts' man of the match, Elliot Jarman, put a through ball to Adrian Salisbury, who made no mistake from inside the box. The lead could have been doubled moments later, when a Ben Evett curling shot, was kept out by the woodwork. As in previous matches, Welly switched off after scoring, and the visitors struck on 22 and 25 minutes and a further breach on 35 minutes, left the half time deficit, an undeserved 1-3. Turning around, with the slope in their favour, the tangarines hoped to make a quick impact, but it was difficult to understand how they conceded a fourth after only 40 seconds of the restart, which they themselves took!. This left a mountain to climb, and although the visitors scored a fifth 10 minutes in, the majority of the last 30 minutes was played in the opponents half. With Ricky Morrey-Jones probing down the right and Callum Richardson joining the attatcks from midfield, Welly were a handful and got a deserved 2nd with a full 20 minutes remaining, when a left wing cross was turned in to his own net by a Somerton defender. Further scoring looked likely, but 3 good saves from Luke Vernon in the home goal kept the visitors at bay, and Wellington couldn't turn their territorial advantage into more goals, so the cup dream faded for another year.

Desperate Dozen

Taunton North Youth 12 Wellington U15's 0

A lack lustre performance from Wellington, saw them leak 12 goals against a skillful Taunton side on Sunday afternoon. The misery started after only 90 seconds, when the home sides' first attack, resulted in a sharp finish. The visitors struggled to get any meaningful possesion, despite hard work, and further goals on 9 and 15 minutes left an uphill struggle. For 20 minutes Wellington held the hosts at bay, without looking like piercing the home defences, and 2 more goals on the run up to half time was no more than they deserved.

Turning around, Wellington hoped the strong breeze at their backs would put some wind in their sails, sadly this was dashed after only 2 minutes with Taunton's sixth good goal. Wellington kept trying and special mention goes to the 2 full backs, Connor Sellick and man of the match Elliot Reeves. Further breaches followed, and with the visitors heads' dropping, the home side found more freedom to slot home 4 more times in the last 8 minutes, including a penalty, which was converted by the home keeper. The final tally of 12, whilst not flattering the hosts, was probably not what the away sides' commitment deserved.

6 GOAL THRILLER

Wellington u15's 3 Minehead 3

Wellington U15's grabbed their first point of the season, although feel they should probably have left a sunny rec on Sunday afternoon with all 3. Kicking up the slope, the hosts started brightly, with Adrain Salisbury and Ben Evett combining well up front. They both had opportunities within the first 5 minutes, and only a combination of bad luck and the crossbar kept the score goaless. Salisbury finally broke his duck for the season on 25 minutes, when cooly rounding the keeper and slotting home. The home side then took their foot off the gas, allowing Minehead soft possesion who duly equalised within 2 minutes, and a minute later found themselves in front, when Wellington failed to clear their lines. Turning around, with the slope in their favour, Welly, marshalled well at the back by captain Ross Clarke, and ably supported by Elliot Reeves, Elliot Jarman and Connor Sellick, took only 2 minutes to get on terms, with Sam Scarlett cutting in from the left to slot home from close range. As has been the problem this season, the tangarines were only level for a couple of minutes and went into the last 15 trailing 3-2. Numerous chances went begging, before man of the match, Salisbury grabbed his 2nd, and set up a final 5 minutes where the home side should probably have grabbed a 4th or even 5th. Sadly it was not to be, and Minehead were grateful to hear the final whistle and take their first point of the season back to the seaside.

Scoreline Undermines Improvement

Wellington U15's 0 BishopsLydeard U15 5

The scoreline didn't do justice to a vastly improved performance from Wellington at a sunny rec on Sunday afternoon. Kicking down the slope wellington allowed the visitors a soft goal after only 3 mins, but instead of allowing their heads to drop, it inspired the hosts to be competitive all afternoon. Man of the match Callum Richardson added bite to the midfield, and in every position Wellington's determination matched the unbeaten Lydeard. At 1-0 they were always in the game, and a Ben Evett dissallowed goal, for straying marginally offside, gave further hope. The good work was undone 5 mins before the break when Lydeard doubled their lead following a good move.
After the interval, Welly had a quiet spell and allowed a third before having 2 good penalty shouts turned down and missed several more good opportunities. Salt was rubbed into the wounds, with further goals on 30 and 35 minutes, but the tangarines never gave up and Luke Vernons fine performance in goal, was capped by a penalty save on the stroke of full time.

Dragons Breathing Fire

Wellington u 15's 0    Galmington Dragons 7

Wellington's first home match of the season began brightly, built on the solid foundation of Ross Clarke and Elliot Jarman at the centre of defence. Galmington, kicking up the slope in the first half, had two good chances, but sparkling reflexes, by man of the match, Luke Vernon in goal, kept the visitors at bay. The deadlock was broken on 32 minutes, when Galmington broke quickly, to score the only goal of a tight first half. Wellington's job of kicking up hill was made even harder, when Galmington's first attack of the second half resulted in a corner which was slotted home at the far post. The hosts then had their best spell, with Callum Richardson combining well with Adrian Salisbury, who unfortunately spurned 2 good chances. Wellington heads never dropped and the team spirit was fantastic despite tired legs leading to conceding 3 in the last 8 minutes which gave the scoreline a very unbalanced look.

BLOWN AWAY AT ZOYLAND

Wellington U15's started their season with a trip to blustery Westonzoyland on Sunday. Fielding an in-experienced side, the visitors conceded in the 3rd and 8th minutes, before getting a foothold in the game, with Ross Clarke  impressive in the back 4. Wellington held firm until 2 goals in 3 minutes and 1 on the stroke of half time, left them trailing 5-0 at the break. After the interval, Wellington were a match for their opposition for half an hour, with two of their subs, Ricky mory-Jones and Macca Campbell combining for what turned out to be their only goal of the game. At 6-1 the hosts went into overdrive and scored 3 times quickly, leaving the visitors deflated at a 9-1 loss. This was no reflection on their performance and was particularly frustrating for their goalkeeper Luke Vernon who magnificently kept Zoyland at bay many times.
