Taunton Saturday League: Porlock Reserves 2, Wellington A 2
Our A team went into this game knowing a point would seal third place and a possible promotion spot.
The match got under way and Welly had some half opportunities with Porlock causing a few problems with long balls to their tall striker.
Welly won a free kick on the edge of the box which Tennesse Harlow smashed against the outside of the post. Five minutes later, a ducker punch. A mistake at the back saw the Porlock striker run through to make it 1-0. Welly continued to press until half time but never really threatened the goalkeeper.
The second half started in similar fashion as Welly continued to create half opportunities without the Porlock keeper being in too trouble. Then, from a long ball again, Porlock made it 2-0.
Welly showed grit and determination – they could have easily put their heads down but they didn’t. They showed real character to press Porlock and where soon back in the game. A through ball by Matt Holmes saw player-boss Luke O’Hara run through on goal and chip the goalkeeper … 2-1 and game on.
Holmes then smashed a 40-yard shot which hit the crossbar and was smothered by the goalkeeper. Welly made a couple of changes with goal scorer O’Hara being replaced by Tyler Fyfe.
Porlock started to tire and Welly continued to push them back and were rewarded with a penalty from some clever play. Up stepped Holmes who calmy slotted past the keeper to make it 2-2.
Welly, who could have slowed knowing a point would be enough, continued to push for a winner to give themselves some daylight, creating a few chances notably one from Fyfe whose 30-yard shot from a clearance flew just wide of the goal.
With only a few minutes remaining, goalkeeper Rob Hall first slowed the game down by standing with the ball at his feet for a couple of minutes with no Porlock player willing to close him down, then from a free kick tipped a goal bound header over. The full time whistle went and Welly finish third. Will it be enough for promotion? Only time will tell …
