Somerset County Women’s League division one: Middlezoy Ladies 1, Wellington Wildcats Ladies 4
Following their excellent win last week, Wildcats made the short trip to Middlezoy looking to make it successive victories.
Wildcats made two enforced changes to the starting line up from last week – Chloe Payne and Bryony Sellick coming in for the unavailable Georgia Purdy and unavailable from the start Ebony Sellick.
Wildcats were the stronger team from the off and created some early chances through wide players Robyn Stockman and Grayson Kennard.
Wildcats tailed off as they struggled to find their usual fluent passing and this, along with a couple of missed chances, spurred on Middlezoy.
It was the hosts who took a surprise lead in the 28th minute. A ball into open space behind the defence saw a Middlezoy striker one-on-one with goalkeeper Bianca Hamlyn. She blocked superbly but the rebound fell into the path of a second home striker to slot home.
Play was halted as Hamlyn was injured when making the save, but Wildcats regrouped after the restart and soon found themselves on level terms.
They began pressing consistently in the middle of the park through Charlotte Ayers, Chloe Payne and Christina Seaborne with support from centre backs Tenika Goss and Emily Ayers.
After regaining the ball on halfway, Seaborne played a perfectly weighted ball for Jess Regan to run on and feed striker Leah Morrell who levelled from just inside the area.
For the second half, Wildcats brought on Ebony Sellick and last week’s match winner Keeley Coates and they were soon on the attack, spending most of the second period in the opposition half.
It was no surprise When Wildcats went 2-1 up after Kennard took on their defender to strike over the keeper’s head and put them in the lead.
Wildcats were in the ascendancy and a long clearance from Hamlyn to Coates was superbly controlled before Coates played the ball through the defence to assist Ebony Sellick with her first of the afternoon.
Morrell hit the upright with a super shot from the edge of the area and Grace Winter went close after a run from defence before a mistimed tackle from Tenika Goss earned her a yellow card on 70 minutes.
Wildcats wrapped up the game a minute later with Ebony Sellick racing away to smash home after being put clear by Coates.
Ebony Sellick was unlucky not to grab her hat-trick as the Middlezoy keeper saved excellently while she also hit the side netting from an acute angle.
Wildcats’ player-of-the-day, sponsored by Mundy Veneer Ltd, went to Emily Ayers who was excellent in both attack and defence.
Wildcats: Bianca Hamlyn, Grace Winter, Tenika Goss, Emily Ayers, Bryony Sellick, Chloe Payne, Charlotte Ayers, Grayson Kennard, Robyn Stockman, Leah Morrell, Jess Regan, Subs: Keeley Coates, Ebony Sellick, Christina Seaborne (all used).
Wildcats’ attention now moves to Sunday when they make the short journey to Bishops Lydeard, kick-off 2pm.
