Wellington Wildcats U16s.

John Sellick and Steve Crudge took the Wildcats U10s to their first festival of the season at Street on Saturday.

With a bare seven players it was always going to be a challenge with 11 matches to play.

However, the girls came through the test really well having had a lot of fun but with very tired legs!

Jessica H was given the award for player-of-the-day.

The Wildcats U13s faced off against Bishops Lydeard at the Rec in a match which saw both teams testing each other in the early stages.

Lydeard found their rhythm and managed to break through with a clinical display, netting five goals before the half-time whistle.

In the second half, the Wildcats came out with renewed determination. Despite the scoreline, the girls worked hard for each other, showing incredible grit.

Their pressing and commitment to push forward gave them several opportunities, but at times they overextended in their pursuit of a goal.

Bishops Lydeard countered to score three goals but, despite the uphill challenge, the Wildcats’ heads never dropped with the match ending 8-0 to Lydeard.

The Wildcats’ unity, team spirit and willingness to fight for each other were clear throughout the match even though the result didn’t go their way. Every player gave their all and the coaching team couldn’t be prouder of their efforts.

This performance can be built on at training for future games.

Special mentions go to Faith D, who was awarded the away team player-of-the-day for her outstanding performance, and to Cheyenne C, being named the coaches’ player-of-the-match on her debut, recognising her hard work and determination.

Well done to all the girls!

The Wildcats U14s produced their best performance so far with a resounding 8-0 win at Middlezoy.

It started in a physical manner with both Lola S and Emilia S taking knocks, but this seemed to inspire the Wildcats and, having rung the changes, Flo N broke free and scoring the opener.

Having worked out how to play on the small pitch, the defence and keeper played their part in blunting the opposition from having a meaningful shot in the entire match.

Faith NH was in menacing form in midfield and completed a first half hat-trick.

With the game sealed, the Wildcats were led under the guidance of captain Jess B in the second half to ensure the game was completed in an assured fashion.

Lola S lifted the skills from training to score her first of the season to the biggest cheer of the day, Emilia S completed a hat-trick and Lleya C scored a trademark goal from the 18-yard line.

Player-of-the-match went to Faith NH for her all-round play, and congratulations to Emilia S for passing 50 goals for the club.

The teamwork and communication displayed is the ultimate achievement in this maturing team.

The Wildcats U16s went down to a 5-2 defeat as home to Weston Mendip, living up to the old adage of “a game of two halves”.

Wildcats struggled to get any momentum in the first half – their passing wasn’t as accurate as it needed to be, and it was little surprise that Weston Mendip went ahead on 20 minutes.

Wildcats were briefly back in the game when Lola H levelled the scores and Orlaith C hit the upright before Mendip scored two further goals, the second being with the last kick of the half.

In contrast, the Wildcats were outstanding in the second half dominating from start to finish.

Lola H scored her second midway through the half, while the post again came to Mendip’s rescue on a couple of occasions as Wildcats threatened to draw level. The Mendip keeper also produced a fine save to keep out an Amy M drive.

The final say went to Weston Mendip who scored again with almost the last kick of the match.

The team will look to build on their superb second half performance when they play at Wembdon on Saturday.

Wildcats’ player-of-the-match went to Kelsie S.
