Les Phillips Cup second round: Wellington 1, Cheddar 3
Wellington bowed out of the Western League’s Les Phillips Cup with their second successive defeat at the Playing Field tonight (Tuesday, November 20th).
After their eight-match winning run was ended by Bridgwater on Saturday, manager Richard Cherry rang the changes against a team lying 19th in the division below them.
His line-up included central defender Jordan Hayman, playing his first game back after breaking a bone in his foot at the end of August.
There was nothing to choose between the sides in a scrappy first half but it was Cheddar who broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time.
An awkward backpass to keeper Jake Viney was closed down by Jamie Moss and the clearance clattered off him into the net.
Wellington were given the perfect chance to get back in the game five minutes into the second half after they hit the post and, in the ensuing scramble, the ref pointed to the penalty spot for a high foot.
But Jake Quick’s kick was well saved by keeper Taylan Ross-Greek who then reacted brilliantly to block from Matt Crawley on the rebound.
The Tangerines were made to pay for that miss as Cheddar doubled their advantage after 56 minutes, Elliott Keen driving a low shot past Viney.
The hosts immediately reduced the arrears through Crawley, who lunged to divert a Jack Bryant cross in off the crossbar, and it was game on.
However, the visitors’ young side defended well and they wrapped up victory 11 minutes from time with a clinical finish by Moss for his second of the game.
Wellington will be hoping for a return to form in the league on Saturday when their run of homes games continues against Welton Rovers.
