On a wet and windy day in Bridgwater, Wellington United U12s gave a much-improved display against Wembdon Youth.

Wellington were very much in the mix early on and holding their own, only for Wembdon to open the scoring after seven minutes.

Heads held high, the Tangerines kept pushing forward and Jack McDonald equalised two minutes later, assisted by Harry Newstead.

Wellington kept the fight alive with some good end-to-end football but conceded a second goal from a corner kick which found a Wembdon player’s head and subsequently the back of the net to make it 2-1 to the hosts at half-time.

The second half kicked off with all to play for but Wellington conceded two early goals, literally one after the other.

Wellington came alive again and really took the game to Wembdon. They had a chance pull one back when they when were awarded a penalty but unfortunately the penalty hit the bar.

The visitors fought on with multiple chances at goal but were unable to capitalise on their openings and the game ended 4-1 with the Wembdon coach commenting on how much the team had improved.

Manager Steve Newstead said: “This result is testament to how far we have come as a newly formed team beaten 9-0 by Wembdon on the first meeting. Well done, everyone.”

Coach Richard Upham added: “This is what makes coaching worth it – seeing the improvement”.

Well done to man-of-the-match Theo Keep (pictured) and player-of-the-match Roberts Davidsons.
