Somerset Premier Cup second round: Wellington 0, Mendip Broadwalk 4
Wellington suffered their second successive defeat to lower division opposition as they bowed out of the Somerset Premier Cup tonight (Wednesday, November 27th).
Last week, they were beaten by Cheddar in the Les Phillips Cup – this time it was another Western League division one side, newly-promoted Mendip Broadwalk, who ran out worthy winners.
On a freezing night at the Playing Field, manager Richard Cherry again rang the changes and his side provided little to warm the watching spectators.
The first half was relatively even, with Josh Lukins twice going close for the Tangerines, but it was the visitors from Bristol who broke the deadlock after 24 minutes as Dylan Whittle drove a low shot in off the post.
Mendip then doubled their advantage after 55 minutes with Mickey Gough producing another clinical finish.
Wellington were unable to find any rhythm to their play and they were opened up twice more before the end as Rhys Hickery (76 minutes) and Elliot Moore (82) rubbed salt into their wounds.
The only positive aspect from another night to forget was the return of Kieran Bailey and Lewis Jennings from long-term ankle injuries.
Wellington have gone from recording eight successive wins to suffering a hat-trick of defeats but now have a chance regroup as they are without a game this weekend.
Wellington: Jake Viney, Ryan Hibbert, Tom Stone, Jordan Hayman, Sam Gleeson, Will Pinnick, Sam Towler, Sam Pashen, Josh Lukins, Nathan Byrne, Josh Baker. Substitutes: Kieran Bailey, Matt Crawley, Lewis Jennings, Alex Cherry (all used).
