Somerset Senior Cup: Wells City Reserves 2, Wellington Reserves 0
Our Reserves bowed out of the Senior Cup at Wells City yesterday (Saturday)
On a heavy pitch, player-manager Mark Owen was forced into late changes with some players unable to travel.
Once again, Tom Hawkings had to step into goal with first-choice keeper Charlie, his brother, unavailable for what looks like the rest of the season.
The game started with both teams keeping the ball on the floor but. with both defences playing well. few chances fell to either team.
After 25 minutes, Wells had an opportunity to take the lead when their number nine was sent clear but he hit his shot against the post and the ball was cleared.
Then, on 30 minutes, Wellington were forced into two changes as forward Freddie Margettes and defender Mark Owen both came off injured/unwell.
The first half ended 0-0 with both defences in fine form – particularly man-of-the-match Dylan Groves and Connor Noble for Wellington.
The second half started better for Wells as they began to create chances, but Hawkings was outstanding in goal, preventing them taking the lead.
On 65 minutes, the deadlock was broken when Wells broke down the right and, as the ball was crossed, it was blocked twice but fells to a forward five yards out to knock it into the net.
The game was now end-to-end as Wellington chased the equaliser but this gave Wells opportunities on the break.
Again, the Wellington defence held on with some excellent defending and last ditch tackles.
In the final minute, Wellington had a great opportunity to draw level when a fine move led to Ben Evett being sent clear and, as he tried to control the ball on the edge of the box, he knocked it wide which gave the onrushing keeper a chance to knock it wide and clear.
With the game now in injury time and the visitors pushing, Luke Perry tried to play a ball back to the keeper but only managed to pass it to the Wells centre forward, unmarked 20 yards out. He skipped past Hawkings in goal and walked the ball into the empty net.
Full time saw a 2-0 win to Wells which they deserved on chances created.
