Jewson Western League premier division: Wellington 0, Barnstaple Town 1
A spirited display – including a missed penalty – was not enough to prevent Wellington suffering a narrow defeat by promotion hopefuls Barnstaple at the Playing Field last night (Wednesday, January 22nd).

Midfielder Jack Winsor was our man-of-the-match and he received the award from club helper and former player Keith Harcombe on behalf of sponsors, R&M Wholesale.
Manager Richard Cherry was without a number of players including injured keeper Jake Viney and midfielder Sam Towler.
But his patched-up squad – with new keeper Jack McAndrews making his debut – gave a good account of themselves and only an early goal was the difference between the sides.
The game was seven minutes old when the Tangerines were caught out by a ball over the top and striker Tommy Rogers ran through to put the visitors ahead.
Wellington, who were otherwise outstanding defensively, refused to let their heads drop and were on top for the rest of the first half.
Sully McKenna was denied by keeper Kane Gregory after being played in by Miles Quick who almost chipped Gregory just before the break.
Cherry made two changes at half-time with Glen Wright and another debutant, James De Selincourt, replacing the injured Mark Cornish and McKenna.
There was little to choose between the sides in the second half and Wellington were given a lifeline with 15 minutes remaining when striker Jake Quick was fouled and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.
But the kick by Quick’s brother, Miles, was well saved by Gregory who then blocked with his legs to deny Jack Winsor.
That was the signal for a late rally by the hosts, but it proved in vain as they failed to earn the point their efforts more than deserved.
At least the performance will give them confidence for another home game on Saturday when Nailsea & Tickenham visit the Playing Field.
