Our Wanderers U11 boys played their first nine-a-side fixture on home soil this weekend, taking on Galmington.
It was a landmark step for the team and, although the result did not quite go their way, the performance gave plenty of reasons for encouragement.
The game began in scrappy fashion, as both sides adjusted to the new format and larger pitch. Wellington were immediately competitive, working hard across the pitch and showing determination in every challenge. However, as the half went on, the team at times struggled to maintain their shape.
Galmington were able to take advantage of this, scoring twice before the break despite some brave defending and good saves.
In possession, Wellington looked most dangerous when they kept the ball on the ground, passing short and supporting each other with good movement.
This approach created a number of promising chances but, despite their effort, the home side could not quite find the breakthrough goal they deserved.
The second half saw individual players step up with promising performances across the pitch, showing both skill and spirit.
As the boys continue to learn the demands of nine-a-side football, their teamwork, positioning, and decision-making will only grow stronger through training and future matches.
While the scoreline was not in their favour, the team can be very proud of their first outing in this new format. The foundations are clearly in place for a successful season of learning and improvement, and the commitment shown today will serve them well in the weeks ahead.
