Stitch2Print Devon & Exeter League: Colyton 3, Wellington Reserves 6

With no game for the first team yesterday (Saturday) the spotlight fell on our Reserves and they responded with a six-goal salvo at Colyton.

Only a point separated the teams in mid-table and Wellington started the game with the wind at their backs.

They made some early chances but it was the home side who took the lead from a low shot.

It was not long before Wellington found themselves 2-0 down as a shot from 20 yards evaded the keeper.

Wellington needed a quick response and nearly had it when Jack Bryant hit a shot from 30 yards which smashed against the bar.

After 30 minutes, Wellington did pull a goal back after a fine move. Alfie Barrett played the ball back to Jack Bryant on the edge of the box and he hit a fine shot which left the keeper rooted to the spot 2-1.

Five minutes later, Wellington found a equaliser as Barrett scored from close range.

Wellington should have taken the lead but missed chances meant the first half ended  2-2.

Wellington, now against the wind, kept the ball on the ground and started to dominate play.

They took the lead after an hour as Jack Bryant beat a defender to the ball and, as he raced through on goal, slipped the ball past the advancing keeper to make it 3-2 and a fantastic comeback.

Within five minutes, Colyton drew level from a penalty – harshly awarded against keeper

Harry Gregory, with Luke Perry sin binned for his complaint.

Being down to ten men, the lads had to dig in deep and that’s exactly what they did.

They actually took the game to Colyton with Ollie Nott having an excellent chance as he raced clear with only the keeper to beat but dragged his shot wide.

With Perry back on the pitch, Wellington re-took the lead when he ran down the wing and sent over a fine cross which was met by Alfie Barrett to thump a header into the net – 4-3 to Wellington.

A fifth goal was not far away and, after a fine move on the right, Sam Poole found himself unmarked at the back post to tap home from six yards.

With the lads flying, player of the match Jack Bryant added a sixth and completed his hat-trick to make the final score 6-3 to Wellington.
