Jewson Western League premier division: Wellington 2, Buckland Athletic 2
Wellington produced a stirring second-half fightback to earn a deserved draw against fifth-placed Buckland Athletic in a lively contest at the Carly Press Ground.
The game burst into life from the first whistle. Buckland fashioned an early opening but volleyed over, before the Tangerines survived a scare on six minutes when a shot squeezed past keeper Jack McAndrews only for Mark Cornish to race back and clear off the line.
At the other end, Alfie Slough twice threatened in quick succession — first seeing a finish chalked off for offside, then being denied by the keeper moments later.
Buckland continued to carry a threat, and Ryan Bush went close after a direct run on 20 minutes. Their pressure finally told on 34 minutes as the hosts were caught out by a quickly taken free-kick over the top. Bush rounded McAndrews and finished neatly from a tight angle to put the visitors ahead.
Wellington had strong penalty appeals waved away shortly afterwards, and Buckland made the most of their reprieve by doubling the advantage on 41 minutes — this time from a short corner, a fierce header by James Simmonds powering past McAndrews to send the home side in two goals down at the break.
Manager Richard Cherry introduced Miles Quick and then Douglas Camilo, both delayed en route to the game, and the fresh legs helped shift the momentum.
But the turning point came on 59 minutes when ex-Tangerine, Phil Mendonca, was shown a straight red for a high challenge on Josh Lukins.
Despite Buckland being a man down, McAndrews made a fine save to keep Wellington in it, and the hosts capitalised in the 66th minute. Lukins delivered a superb cross which skipper Sam Towler met with a brilliant first-time volley to halve the deficit.
Buckland almost restored their cushion but were denied by another goal-line clearance, before Wellington came inches from levelling when a defender sliced a volley just over his own bar. The resulting corner sparked a furious goalmouth scramble which somehow stayed out.
Wellington kept battling into the closing stages and finally got their reward on 88 minutes. Towler whipped in a dangerous free-kick, and James De Selincourt flung himself to crash home a header off the bar.
There was still time for one last chance deep into stoppage time, Camilo stretching at the far post but just unable to turn in the winner.
After their gutsy fightback, the Tangerines now have a ten-day break before travelling to St Austell on Saturday, November 29th.
