Somerset County Women’s League Cup: Frome Town Women 1, Wellington Wildcats Ladies 1 (Frome win 2-1 on penalties).
Our Wildcats Ladies failed to reach their cup semi-finals for the second season running as a tense draw was followed by a narrow defeat on penalties at Frome on Sunday.
Wildcats made a dream start, taking the lead after just four minutes through a moment of brilliance from Milly Howe. Picking up the ball outside the area, Howe unleashed a stunning strike that rocketed into the top corner, leaving the Frome goalkeeper with no chance.
Wildcats carried that momentum through the first half, creating the better opportunities and controlling large spells of play.
Holding a deserved 1-0 lead at the break, Wildcats looked determined to press on, but Frome responded early in the second half with a well-taken equaliser which shifted the balance of the tie.
Despite the setback, Wildcats regrouped and pushed hard for a winner. They fashioned several clear chances late on, but the Frome goalkeeper produced a trio of outstanding saves — including a crucial stop in the final minute — to force the game to penalties.
In the shootout, Wildcats were edged out 2-1, allowing Frome to avenge last season’s result. A valiant performance, but cruel cup heartbreak for the visitors.
Team: Bianca Hamlyn, Grayson Kennard, Emily Ayers, Tenika Goss, Grace Winter, Imogen Edmondston-Low, Milly Howe, Charlotte Ayers, Leah Morrell, Tash Hole, Keeley Coates.
Wildcats have an immediate chance to overcome their defeat as they visit Frome on Sunday, this time in the league, before completing their 2025 programme with home games against Bridport and Banwell.
