Western Counties Floodlit Youth League: Axminster Town U18s 0, Wellington U18s 0
Our U18s gained their first point of the season with a goalless draw away at Axminster Town last Thursday (November 10th).
The game was played in a good spirit between two evenly matched teams who, despite the windy and rainy conditions, tried to play decent football.
In the first half, chances were of a premium with the Wellington back four of Ben Fowler, Ned Ogilvie, Dylan Groves and Dylan Sellick comfortably marshalling the Axminister forwards. On a couple of occasions, when half chances were created, keeper Sam Harcombe comfortably dealt with any threats.
At the other end, Wellington’s frontline of Sean Conway, Matt Brereton and James King tried to create chances, but the gusty wind made passing difficult and a couple of good moves came to nothing.
The midfield of Josh Sibands, Jon Wasey and Reuben Nicholls-Searle put in some good tackles and broke up play well. They tried to get on the front foot but, on occasions, their forward passes were just overhit.
A couple of subs, Sam Snook and James Clarke, were introduced to provide fresh legs but clearcut chances continued to be hard to come by.
An off-the-ball incident resulted in Wellington being reduced to ten men when one of their defenders was shown a straight red.
With the game heading for a draw, Wellington thought they had won it right at the death as a dangerous cross from the right was almost met by Sibands, who had made a great run.
In the end, the lads had to settle for a point, but proved they can compete at this level.
A special mention to Josh Cashmore, Josh Moore and Reggie Dursten who, despite not getting on, still provided support for the team from the bench.
