Toolstation League premier division: Wellington 0, Millbrook 0

Wellington started 2023 with a frustrating draw – but welcome point – at home to Millbrook on Holiday Monday.

Defender Jason Quick was our man-of-the-match and received the award from vice-chairman Graham Aspin on behalf of sponsors Chetwood Wealth Management.

After an even first half, the Tangerines dominated proceedings but were unable to make the breakthrough as their Cornish visitors shut up shop.

For their first home game since mid-November, Wellington brought in Callum Chivers and Glen Wright for the injured Mark Cornish and suspended Miles Quick.

There was nothing between the sides from the off with home keeper Harley Wilkinson pulling off a couple of smart stops while, at the other end, Jake Quick saw a free kick well saved and then scrambled away.

It was a different story after the break with Wellington taking the game to Millbrook who hardly got out of their own half.

Ryan Brereton had a shot punched over the bar, a header by Jake Quick flashed wide and Tom Stone’s header was smothered.

Jake Quick had two more efforts but on both occasions keeper Chris Wearing saved well.

It looked like Wellington had found the winner with six minutes remaining when Glen Wright met a corner from Jason Quick but his goalbound effort was headed off the line.

At least they will have been pleased with the response to their Boxing Day defeat at Buckland Athletic and also to see the return to the squad of both Nathan Byrne and Stefan Phillips.

Wellington: Harley Wilkinson, Callum Chivers, Tom Stone, Jason Quick, Jack Bown-Porter, Jamie Nicholson, Eli Collins, Ryan Brereton, Glen Wright, Harvey Dorothy, Jake Quick. Subs: Nathan Byrne and Stefan Phillips (used); Alex Cherry and Kelson Pollard (not used).

The match was preceded by a minute’s silence in memory of our player and friend Lloyd Manning, who passed away suddenly before Christmas.

Lloyd wore the number three shirt, which was not used in the game as a mark of respect.
