Stitch2Print Devon & Exeter League Division One: Wellington Reserves 1, Newtown 2nds 0

Our Reserves stretched their unbeaten run to six games and moved up to fourth in the division with victory at the Playing Field.

Man-of-the-match Dominic Healey received the award from team-mate Tom Davies who works for match sponsors, Hi-Spec Fencing and Landscapes Ltd.

The line-up featured two debutants – central midfielder Will Armstrong and wing back Dominic Healey – who both delivered excellent performances.

The visitors, who had narrowly lost to the league leaders the previous week, started brightly with keeper Tom Hyam, who has just celebrated his 17th birthday, called into early action with a brave save, resulting in a broken finger.

It was now a case of one-way traffic as the Reserves took the game to the visitors with a cohesive approach and attractive attacking football.

After a succession of goal scoring opportunities, a superb delivery by wing back Jordan Sellick split the defence for striker Luke Perry to release a shot on the half-volley inside the far post on 28 minutes.

Further opportunities to increase the lead followed with a narrow advantage the only reward at half-time.

The second half saw the Tangerines reduced in numbers on 55 minutes as Perry was banished to the sin, with the momentum now in favour of the visitors.

Subs Wes Poulsom and Aaron Hawkings, followed by Ned Ogilvie and Logan Sellick, were introduced for both fresh legs and ideas to regain the momentum which nearly paid dividends with a succession of further scoring opportunities not taken.

The visitors competed well, searching for parity, however found Hyam in no mood to capitulate with a succession of excellent stops to maintain a clean sheet.

Hi-Spec Fencing and Landscapes Ltd man-of-the-match was Dominic Healey and thanks to Conway Cladding for match ball sponsorship.
