Somerset County Women’s League Cup: Wellington Ladies 3, Berrow Ladies 1

Our Ladies’ league campaign is coming to an end but their cup run began at the weekend as they hosted Berrow in the second round.

Player-of the match Lauren Smith.

As Wellington kicked off, it was evident that they were keen to make the most of the occasion as they created two chances in the first five minutes with Ash Grabham-White being unfortunate to find the back of the net.

Just after the ten-minute mark, Wellington were awarded a penalty as one of the Berrow defenders seemed to have caught the ball after a strike from Sara Yeatman. Chan Bowle stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way for her first goal of the season.

Wellington then showed that they were not going to slow down, with player-of-the-match Lauren Smith running the show from the midfield.

Smith found left back Maddie Davey out on the wing and Davey struck a perfectly weighted through ball over to Grabham-White for her to run on to for a one-one-one with the Berrow keeper. Grabham-White’s placed shot slammed against the post but she was able to follow up for an easy tap-in. Wellington led 2-0 going into half-time.

Four changes for the Tangerines at the break changes didn’t impact on their performance as the second half got under way.

A few chances for Berrow kept keeper Hannah Worth busy early on but Wellington’s composure persevered and the home side created chance after chance.

Just before the hour mark, another handball from the Berrow defence granted Wellington another penalty. Confident after her last spot kick, Bowle stepped up and blasted the effort just under the bar to complete her brace.

With Wellington cruising, a slight dip in concentration saw a well-worked set piece from Berrow open up the home defence and the away side were able to grab a late goal to make the score 3-1.

With this convincing win, Wellington move on to the quarter-finals of the League Cup with the next round not yet scheduled.

The Ladies turn their attention back to the league as they host Bath City on April 16th.
