Toolstation League premier division: Wellington 1, Torpoint Athletic 5

Wellington saw a dramatic turnaround in fortunes as they played their final Saturday game of the season at the Playing Field.

Our man-of-the-match was young defender Will Armstrong and he received the award from supporter and ex-first team physio Ken Pearson who kindly sponsored the game.

The Tangerines had won 5-1 at Cadbury Heath on Easter Monday but found themselves on the wrong end of a defeat by the same scoreline against their in-form visitors.

They made three changes from their previous game including a full debut for young defender Will Armstrong who was later named man-of-the-match.

But Wellington were far from their best, particularly in the second half when they leaked three goals without reply.

It was first blood to Torpoint after 15 minutes as the ball was chipped into the box from the right and Gary Hird nodded home.

Wellington drew level ten minutes later when Miles Quick crossed to Zeph Collins on the edge of the box and he produced a sumptuous first-time volley which dipped under the bar.

But that proved to be a rare bright spot on a disappointing day for the home side with Torpoint regaining the lead just after the half-hour, Ryan Richards turning a cross off the inside of the post and into the net.

It stayed 2-1 until half-time but the Cornish outfit virtually sealed the points with two more goals – by Richards and Callum Thompson – in the first 12 minutes of the second half.

Torpoint then added a fifth through Hird with 14 minutes remaining to complete Wellington’s misery.

The Tangerines have no midweek game and must need regroup ahead of a tough game next Saturday – they make the long trip to Mousehole, who will clinch the title it they win their game at Bridgwater in midweek.

Wellington: Harley Wilkinson, Will Armstrong, Jack Bown-Porter, Glen Wright, Tom Stone, Jason Quick, Eli Collins, Miles Quick, Jamie Nicholson, Jake Quick, Zeph Collins. Substitutes: Sully McKenna, Tom Burt, Alex Cherry and Rohan Poulsom (used); Stefan Phillips (not used).
