Stitich2Print Devon & Exeter League division one: Wellington Reserves 3, Beer Albion 2nds 0
Our Reserves completed their season with a comprehensive win at the Playing Field last night (Wednesday, April 26th).
The result sees them occupying third position – and possible promotion – with both Bow Athletic and Exeter University able to overtake them should they win their remaining fixtures.
A more experienced and cohesive line-up laid the platform as the opening exchanges favoured the Tangerines.
But they had to wait until the 15th minute when midfielder Connor Noble ghosted in behind the defence to neatly finished from close range from a ball in by Tom Davies.
Five minutes later, Davies was fouled as he competed for a ball in the air inside the box but the usually reliable top scorer Rohan Poulsom blasted the spot kick high over the bar.
The midfield of Noble, Charlie Purvis and Oli Nott worked well together as the search continued for another opening.
Keeper Dave Barrell played some searching balls out of defence and ultimately gained distance on which to build.
The second half continued in the same vein, with any counter attacks from the visitors being quashed by the back three of captain Mark Owen, Davies and man-of-the-match, 17-year-old, Dylan Groves.
Wing back Wes Poulsom saw his neat shot rebound back off the far post, with Davies capitalising to extend the lead on 56 minutes.
Strikers Aaron Merry and Rohan Poulsom were receiving plenty of ball, with their pace and guile causing alarm for the visitors’ defence.
Wing back Luke Perry played some probing balls forward and, on 71 minutes, a pass in behind resulted in Rohan Poulsom being upended and having to leave the field due to injury. Therefore, Merry stepped up and emphatically dispatched from the spot to secure the three points.
The management team would like to thank all the players who have represented the Reserves this season, especially on how they have managed the challenges they have faced both on and off the field of play.
Special thanks to all the man-of-the-match sponsors and particularly Conway Cladding Ltd for their generosity in supporting the team.
