Western Counties Floodlit Youth League south division: Wellington U18s 2, Frome Town U18s 0
Our U18s are three points clear at the top of the table after they beat Frome Town U18s at the Playing Field on Tuesday night (November 21st).
The team – pictured (above) earlier in the season – put in a solid performance in their sixth league game.
They had not played for almost a month since narrowly losing to title favourites Yeovil Town and they were keen to get back to winning ways in front of another good home crowd.
The game started evenly and both teams had early chances. Wellington seemed slightly off the pace and, with difficult conditions underfoot struggled, to get on top of their opponents.
Despite this, they always looked capable of getting a goal and one came along when a defensive mistake let top scorer Freddie Margetts in on goal. He dribbled along the six-yard line, beating defenders and the goalie, before coolly finishing into the corner of the net.
The home side now looked more confident, and their second goal arrived after central defender Dylan Groves, up for a setpiece, was felled in the penalty area. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and the resultant kick was expertly dispatched by captain Ned Ogilvie.
Wellington survived a couple of scares just before half time, including Frome hitting the bar with a shot from distance, but the whistle blew for the break with them leading 2-0.
The home side started slowly after the break and Frome came more into the game which resulted in Wellington losing their shape and not offering as much of a threat
The visitors had some chances and a couple of last-ditch tackles kept them at bay with the game rather fizzling out despite both teams bringing on all their subs and there were no further goals for either side.
This was another positive performance from the team and takes them top of the league at this early stage. T
They will be looking to get more points on the board when they play league newcomers Winscombe at home on next Tuesday, November 28th, with a 7.30pm kick-off.
