Western Counties Floodlit Youth League: Wellington U18s 8, Winscombe U18s 1

Our U18s put in another excellent performance in the seventh league game on Tuesday night.

The team were full of confidence after getting back to winning ways last week and were keen to put in a good performance for a very good home crowd.

Wellington started brightly and made the early breakthrough when the speedy Luke Augustine was brought down in the box. Skipper Ned Ogilvie stepped up and confidently dispatched the resulting spot kick.

Wellington were well on top and added a second when an excellent corner from Jack Ellis was headed in at the back post by midfielder Cez Wisniewski.

It was then time for leading scorer Freddie Margetts to get on the act when his low drive beat the Winscombe keeper to put the home side three goals clear.

The impressive Augustine was in fine form and notched a quickfire double, the first following a neat turn and shot from the edge of the box and the second following a driving run by Dylan Groves who beat three Winscombe defenders before crossing for him to tap in.

Hard working wing-back James Clarke scored the next to send the league leaders into half time leading 6-0.

Winscombe started the second half in a very positive manner and scored the best goal of the game when a visiting midfielder hit a 30-yard screamer into the roof of the net.

This unsettled Wellington and they lost the rhythm they had in the first half.

They had to do some defending as the visitors threw everything at the home defence.

Wellington gradually started to get back in control and they scored their seventh when Groves volleyed in from close range following a corner.

Manager Joe Conway rang the chances to give the squad players a chance and one of these, Leo Manners-Fonteyn, scored an excellent individual goal to complete the scoring.

This was another excellent performance from the team and it keeps them top of the league, although they have played more games than their nearest rivals.

Title favourites Yeovil Town slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Wellington’s next opponents Cheddar, who sit third in the table. Wellington will be looking to avenge the 3-0 home defeat by Cheddar when they travel there next Thursday, December 7th, ko 7.30pm.
