Stitch2Print Devon & Exeter League premier division: Wellington Reserves 3, Uni of Exeter 2nds 0

Our Reserves turned in an excellent display at the Playing Field last night (Wednesday, March 26th) to gain revenge for their recent cup defeat by Uni 2nds.

Jack Bryant was named as man-of-the-match by club media manager Ken Bird.

The result, built on a pair of early goals, lifted them to fifth in the table – CLICK HERE – and boosted their hopes of a top three finish.

Wellington got off to a lively start with Ben Evett firing just over before they took the lead after 11 minutes.

Jack Bryant saw a shot deflected for a corner and, when the cross came back out to him, he drove home the chance.

They doubled their tally shortly afterwards thanks to the persistence of hard-working striker Alfie Barratt who robbed a defender and made ground before driving past the Uni keeper.

The visitors stepped up a gear after their poor start and hit the woodwork twice as they tried to get back into the game.

Wellington also had to play the final ten minutes of the first half with ten men after midfielder Aaron Hawkings was sin binned.

After the break, the hosts tightened their grip on proceedings and prevented any further serious attempts on their goal.

Josh Baker was denied by a point blank save before they added a third in the closing minutes when substitute Jordan Sellick fired home a penalty after man-of-the-match Bryant had been brought down in the box.

On Saturday, the Reserves are away to Crediton United 2nds who are one place and one point behind them in the table.
