Wellington’s four-match unbeaten run ended with defeat away to play-off hopefuls Buckland Athletic this afternoon (Good Friday).
At rain-soaked Homers Heath, the Tangerines held their own for the opening half-hour but a pair of goals either side of half-time left them with too big a mountain to climb.
They went into the game with the same starting 11 which had beaten St Blazey 2-0 in their previous game and there was not much to choose between the sides in the opening exchanges.
But fifth-placed Buckland broke the deadlock after 35 minutes when a low cross reached Ryan Bush – one of the league’s top strikers in recent seasons – and he turned before firing past keeper Jack McAndrews.
Wellington would have wanted to keep it tight in the opening stages of the second half but that was undone by a second home goal only six minutes after the restart.
The visitors gave the ball away twice, resulting in a low cross which saw Bush slide in for his second, getting injured in the process as he collided with the post.
Bucklands could now scent victory and they wrapped up the points with two more goals after 64 and 73 minutes.
First, Jack Baxter cut in from the left to score with a low shot and then a corner was headed home by substitute Jared Lewington.
Wellington were indebted to McAndrews for two excellent saves near the end to keep it at 4-0 while, in between, they had their best effort on goal as another sub, Harry Scott, hit the underside of the bar with a powerful drive.
The Tangerines will now look to pick themselves up and finish their season on a high note as they host Ivybridge Town at the Playing Field on Easter Monday, kick-off 3pm.
