Glen Wright celebrates scoring the game’s only goal.

Jewson Western League premier division: Bridgwater United 0, Wellington 1

A superb team performance earned Wellington their first win of the season as a wonder strike from skipper Glen Wright settled their local derby at Bridgwater United last night (Tuesday, August 26th).

The game was only three minutes old when Wright took aim from 35 yards and the ball flew over keeper Louis Smith and into the net.

Bridgwater have signed a host of players during the close season but they were kept at bay as Wellington made it one draw and one win under new manager Josh Stunell.

After their dream start, the Tangerines frustrated the hosts who were limited to couple of half-chances as the first half ended 1-0.

It was a similar story after the break as Bridgwater could not find a way past the well organised and hard-working visitors.

Indeed, Wellington almost made it 2-0 after 82 minutes as sub Douglas Camilo was denied by a great block from Smith.

Bridgwater’s frustration boiled over in the closing minutes when striker Owen Howe was shown a red card for a late challenge on keeper Greg McAndrews.

But the hosts kept pressing for an equaliser and thought they had got it in the seventh minute of injury time as they finally beat McAndrews only for young defender Jake Haggerty to produce a magnificent clearance to prevent the ball crossing the line.

The Tangerines are without a fixture on Saturday and will be looking forward to finally getting their home games under way on September 6th when Helston Athletic visit the Playing Field.
