Taunton Saturday League division one: Wellington A 4, Wyvern United 3

Our A team returned to action with a thrilling victory over top-of-the-table Wyvern at the Playing Field.

Wellington went into the game with no win in six league matches and with ‘new/old’ manager Luke O’Hara and his assistant Connor Porter in charge for their first time together.

A brave move from the management saw a change in shape and formation.

Wellington came out slightly stronger than Wyvern and, although both sides had chances, the home side found themselves 2-0 after Wyvern had hit the post and bar, the goals coming from Connor Noble and Thomas Scarlett.

Wellington then gave a penalty away through a handball. Everyone in the ground thought the ball had gone in but somehow it curled just wide. They then went up the other end and made it 3-0 through Oli Ghazala. Wyvern continued to play and pulled one back just before the break.

The second half was mostly Wyvern with Wellington looking to counter, the visitors hitting the bar twice and then scoring to make it 3-2.

With 15 minutes left to play, the home side counter attacked and a looping header from Liam Thorne made it 4-2.

Wyvern, again never gave up. They continued to press and once again scored through a well-worked goal.

It was a backs to the walls job for Wellington but they managed to squeeze over the line for a massive three points in which is proving a very tough division.

Great start to Luke and Connor’s reign, well done to Warren Toth for MOTM and welcome back Darren Mace and Willl Powell from long injuries.

Cup action this week as the lads take on Porlock Reserves on Friday night with an 8pm ko on the Taunton college astro.
