League Cup quarter-final: Stogursey 4, Wellington A 1

Our A team’s five-game unbeaten run came to a halt against well-organised and established Stogursey who had a player with Football League experience in their side … and it showed!

Welly started disastrously and found themselves 3-0 down, struggling to get into the game.

A switch around in formation saw Welly start to pick up and we pulled a goal back before half-time through the impressive Brad Holmans.

In the second half, every Welly player dug in deep and put in an unreal performance, pegging Stogursey back in their own half. Everyone worked hard all over the pitch creating many chances – how we didn’t score we will never know.

The lads worked tirelessly hard and reduced Stogursey to only long distance shots on the break.

With 15 minutes left Welly had to go for it and switched to a 3-3-4 formation. Again we continued to press, Mitch Hanson and Aaron Merry coming closest to pull a goal back.

Two minutes remained and Stogursey broke and scored a worldly to seal their place in the semi-finals.

Really proud of every single player this evening who put in a big shift, which didn’t go unrecognised as the opposition’s former league player had many positive words and comments about our performance, especially a couple of the youngsters who he had a quiet word with at the end (much appreciated).

It was tough on the boys as they were outstanding with man-of-the match going to Mitch Hanson for covering every blade of grass in the second half and stopping many of Stogursey’s attempts to counterattack.
