Somerset County Women’s League: Wellington Ladies 7, Porlock Ladies 3
An exciting afternoon for Wellington Ladies included a few new faces with Maisie Waygood, Lauren Smith and Amy Sharkey all making their debuts for the club.
It wasn’t the best start for the Ladies as they found themselves 2-0 down after 45 minutes. However, Wellington did not let their heads drop and made sure they hit the ground running in the second half.
Two goals from Leah Morrell in the first five minutes of the half brought Wellington back into the game, and gave the Ladies the confidence to keep the momentum until the end.
Leah couldn’t stop scoring and finished off an excellent run with a well-placed shot to complete her hat-trick and put Wellington into the lead, making the scoreline 3-2 within the hour.
Wellington did not stop there; another excellent performance in the middle of the park from Marie Barrow helped keep the team’s hunger alive, and debut goals from Sharkey and Smith put them further into the lead.
With 15 minutes left there was some complacency in the air as Porlock managed to get a third, but this helped the Ladies push for more. Marie Barrow and Jess Regan put the game to bed after both managing to get a goal each, making the score 7-3 at the final whistle.
With all debutants making an immediate impact on the game, it was clear that player-of-the-match Waygood stood out on the day as her agility and composure were a fantastic addition to the defensive line.
Wellington will now look to keep this winning mentality for their next home game against Stockwood Wanderers Women next Sunday.
