COVID Cup: Wellington A 1, Staplegrove 3
Well done to Staplegrove who confirmed their place in the COVID Cup finals, leaving Welly needing to win next weekend’s game v Stogursey to join them.
The game itself was a feisty affair which the referee struggled to control.
Welly went up 1-0 through Thomas Scarlett.
Five minutes later, a two-footed high lunge inside the box from the opposition resulted in an indirect free kick and no card shown.
A few off-the-ball incidents led to Brad Holmans removing himself from the game and this saw Welly lose momentum with Staplegrove scoring a very good equaliser.
In the second half, Staplegrove took charge of the game and although Welly managed a few tame efforts and worked hard, they never really got going fully and Grove managed to get themselves a two-goal cushion to make it 3-1.
Tensions escalated but the referee somehow only gave three yellow cards when he could have shown red.
Hats off to the Grove management and most of their team who fully deserved their victory.
