Toolstation League premier division: Mousehole 3, Wellington 3

A pulsating game of football saw Wellington return from their longest league journey with a well-earned point at newcomers Mousehole.

It was a 280-mile round trip into Cornwall and the players could hold their heads high after a wholehearted performance against a talented outfit who look like they will be a force to be reckoned with in their debut campaign.

The match was end-to-end stuff from the kick-off with the sides trading four goals as they went in level at the break.

Miles Quick gave Wellington the lead after 27 minutes when home keeper Cory Harvey cleared the ball straight to him and he fired it back into the net off a defender.

Mousehole hit back to equalise almost immediately with a superb shot on the turn by Steve Burt which flew into the top corner, only for Wellington to regain their lead after 42 minutes.

Rohan Poulsom pounced on a defensive slip and fed Jake Quick who shimmied to make room before clipping the ball past the keeper.

However, Mousehole made it 2-2 in stoppage time when James Devine turned home a corner at the far post.

The home side then took the lead for the first time five minutes after the restart as a low cross from the left was clinically dispatched by Josh Magin.

They should have increased their lead when Andy Elcock sliced through the Wellington defence but his shot came back off the inside of the post.

At the other end, Sam Towler – who has rejoined Wellington from Bridgwater – almost equalised but his downward header was somehow kept out by the keeper’s legs.

Wellington were not to the outdone and earned a deserved point as the game moved into injury time.

Substitute Jack Bown-Porter produced a quick long-throw over the top of the home defence and Jake Quick ran on and kept his composure before knocking the ball home.
