Somerset County Women’s League: Wellington Ladies 5, Pen Mill Ladies Reserves 1

Our Ladies kicked off the 2021-22 season with a dominant win over Pen Mill Ladies Reserves.

A few competitive debuts in Char Sharkey, Alessandra Sears and Helen Stevenson brought experience and new positional possibilities to the squad while Zoe Armitage wore the captain’s armband for the first time.

Wellington started strongly with Amy Sharkey slotting home the first goal of the afternoon in the first five minutes of play. The Ladies kept the pressure on, and secured a second with Lauren Smith scoring a 25-yard screamer which carried the team to half-time.

In the second half, Amy scored another and pushed the team to keep going. Jess Regan, who had an excellent game, managed to smash home a fourth for Wellington.

A slight dip in concentration allowed Pen Mill to take advantage and get one back, however, Wellington were keen to reply, and ten minutes later Amy was presented with a fantastic chance to grab her hat-trick after a keeper error from Pen Mill, which she took. A brilliant start for Amy and the team.

Player of the Match was hat-trick hero Amy but special mentions to Alessandra and Char, both playing as wingbacks and showing real promise and maturity in their new roles for the club.

An exciting time for the Ladies as they now sit top of the table after the first matchday and they hope to continue with this level of high quality, high intensity football.

Next up is a home game against Wells City Ladies on September 12th.
