Somerset County Women’s League: Combe St Nicholas 0, Wellington 3
Our Ladies returned to league action as they were hosted by Combe St Nicholas in a must-win contest as we reach the business end of the season.
As is tradition this season, Wellington started off strongly with a few early chances and, at the ten-minute mark, Tash Hole poked home a rebound off the Combe post to mark her 13th goal of the campaign, and Wellington’s first of the afternoon.
Two other opportunities struck the woodwork during the first half and the scored remained 1-0 going into the break.
The second half kicked off and Wellington’s defence was tested with Combe trying to take a leaf out of Wellington’s book by attempting to strike early.
But the Wellington defence stayed strong, with player-of-the-match Imogen Cashmore being especially effective in defusing any real attempts from the home side’s attack.
With a few more attempts coming off the woodwork around the hour mark, the Ladies kept their heads up and Jess Regan was able to put the game firmly in Tangerine hands by scoring two in the last 15 minutes to secure the win.
With other opposition playing their League Cup fixtures this weekend, the victory puts Wellington back at the top of the table.
However, focus must shift yet again as they now face Bishops Lydeard Reserves in the League Cup next Sunday.
