Somerset County Women’s League: Wells City 2, Wellington 0

Our newly promoted Ladies kicked off their season in Division One against Division Two champions, and also newly promoted, Wells City.

Ash Grabham and Lara White made their second debuts since returning to the club in the summer after a few years away, and Aimee Trigell and Jess Kerslake both made their debuts from the bench.

Spirits were high leading into the first half as Wellington created most of the chances, however all attempts at goal were placed directly into the Wells  keeper’s hands or just scraped wide of the woodwork.

The high-intensity efforts from Wellington did not falter with these missed chances and the dominant Tangerines defence gave the Division Two champions a hard time to find any form in front of goal.

The attacking frustrations carried through to the second half where Wellington continued to knock on the door, using all manner of creativity to get their first goal of this game, and the season.

Alas, it was not meant to be for the Tangerines as Wells City took the lead from a blistering 25-yard strike in the 82nd minute.

Wellington were determined to keep their heads high and promptly broke through on goal straight from kick off. Tash Hole was brought down in the penalty area but the referee did not blow his whistle and play continued.

Although Wellington’s defence was strong and repelled most of Wells’ efforts throughout the match, the home side grabbed their second for the afternoon at the 89th minute, killing the game.

The Ladies sat proud of their efforts from the season opener, as the scoreline does not tell the story of the full 90 minutes.

Without a match next weekend, Wellington look forward to hosting Ilminster Reserves at home on September 18th.
