Somerset County Women’s League: Yeovil Town Ladies 6, Wellington Wildcats Ladies 0

Wildcats knew they needed to be at the top of their game to take any points from the Glovers but an unfortunate defensive error after ten minutes gifted the hosts an opening goal.

A second followed on 16 minutes and a third, the pick of the goals, after 18 minutes before Wildcats began to play some football of their own.

They found success on both flanks through Robyn Stockman, Ella Hartley and later Leah Morrell, but once the fullbacks were beaten, Yeovil’s centre backs were always in position to clear.

Yeovil’s fourth goal came on 24 minutes. Wildcats stepped up a gear and were able to deny any further goals through some excellent tackles in midfield by Emily Ayers and Georgia Purdy, a couple of well-timed clearances from Naomi Southcott and an excellent save from Bianca Hamlyn.  Half-Time 4-0.

Wildcats conceded early in the second half but, following a change in formation, were able to reduce the number of attacks on their goal through a very disciplined approach.

They did concede a penalty on the hour mark, but Hamlyn saved well to her right, before Yeovil completed the scoring on 65 minutes.

With the result not in doubt, in the final 20 minutes of the game Wildcats were able to show what they are capable of, creating several chances of their own, again through the wide channels.

Morrell and Stockman both had chances go narrowly over the bar, while Grace Winter also had an effort saved by the Yeovil keeper following a run from her own half.

At the other end, they had a couple of corners to defend, which they did well while Hamlyn also made one full-length stop to her left.

Despite the scoreline, there were many positives to take from the game, while one area they will look to improve is their fitness. With this in mind, they are exploring the possibility of training twice a week going forward.
