Stitch2Print Devon & Exeter League division one: Newtown 2nds 6, Wellington Reserves 0

After a morning pitch inspection, the game was passed to play so our Reserves travelled down to Newton St Cyres to play Newtown FC.

Manager Mark Owen was forced into changes in midfield with players on holiday or suspended but the team started well, creating early chances notably for Wed Poulsom who only just failed to meet a cross with his head with the empty goal in front of him.

With 15 minutes on the clock, Newtown took the lead with their striker racing through. Charlie Hawkings did well to force him wide but he took his time to roll the ball back towards the penalty spot for a team-mate to pass it into the net with Owen on the line trying in vain to stop it.

There wasn’t long to wait for Newtown’s second as one of their attackers picked the ball up wide on the left, raced into the box and, after a few failed challenges, slotted the ball past keeper Hawkings.

This was a poor five minutes for Wellington and things got worse as they conceded two more goals in the last ten mins of the half – a fine free kick from the edge of the box and a header from a corner.

Changes were made for the second and, although Wellington performed better, neither team really created much more.

Young Lenny Old, coming on as a sub, had a shot saved well by the Newtown keeper and again Wes Poulsom just unable to connect with only the keeper to beat.

With Wellington pushing and starting to lose shape, Newtown scored twice more in the final minutes.

A day really to forget for Wellington (apart from the journey home via Exeter!) and another tough away day awaits on Saturday, November 25th, with a trip to play University of Exeter 3rds.

All other matches for our senior sides at the weekend were postponed and the Toolstation League home game v Clevedon Town, which was among the casualties, has been rearranged for Saturday, January 27th.
