Our Wanderers U15s got off to a flying start to the new season with two wins from two, using 30 different players.
Their Taunton League Division One campaign began with an impressive 7–1 away victory against newly promoted Wembdon yesterday (Sunday).
After the previous day’s opening victory in the Exeter League, the boys made the short journey up the M5 knowing they wanted to set the standard, put in a big performance and send an early message to the rest of the division.
Wellington started cautiously but soon took control, enjoying plenty of possession and creating several chances. Kaan broke the deadlock with a powerful long-range effort before Archie doubled the lead with a well-worked move and composed finish.
The Wanderers continued to dominate after the break, with Deegan producing a superb diagonal pass for Archie to run through and make it 3–0.
Kaan and Tristan continued to drive the team forward from midfield, while Deegan and Jake also found the net, with Jake scoring twice as Wellington eventually reached seven goals.
Wembdon grabbed a consolation, but the Wanderers remained firmly in control.
Freddie, Oaks, Sam, Archie and Ev worked hard defensively, while the substitutes Jimmy, Jaden and Alex all made a positive impact.
Tristan was named player of the match after an outstanding midfield display.
Wanderers United U15s opened their Exeter League Division 4 campaign with a 1-0 home win over Colyton Crusaders on Saturday
Colyton have strengthened considerably, bringing in six players from last season’s Division 1 Axminster side, making Wellington’s victory all the more impressive.
The young Tangerines started brilliantly, playing some excellent football down the slope and controlling midfield for long periods. The only thing missing was a finish, with the hosts occasionally looking for an extra pass rather than taking the shot on.
The breakthrough eventually came when Toby L won a penalty after being challenged in the box. Toby M made no mistake from the spot, firing into the corner to give Wellington a 1–0 lead.
Colyton grew into the game, but Wellington’s back four of Freddie, Finn, Harley and Ruben stood firm.
The Wanderers continued to press after the break and had chances to extend their lead, including a powerful Finn effort which rattled the bar. However, they had to settle for the narrow victory.
Tyler was outstanding in goal, making several important saves and earning the player of the match award. Rhys and Reece also impressed, while Ed, Sam, Lucas, Tommy, Toby, Jacko and Wesley all made valuable contributions.
A clean sheet, three points and an excellent start to the campaign.
