Taunton Saturday League: Wellington A 1, Bridgwater Sports 5
After impressive results against title challengers Wyvern and Staplegrove, Wellington A’s bubble was finally burst by Bridgwater Sports who, like the reverse fixture, again had just too much quality for a brave Tangerine Army.
The result does not fairly reflect how close the teams were. Wellington will know that several of the goals were down more to defensive weakness than attacking prowess including the opener which was conceded after Wellington failed to clear from a corner.
The Tangerine Army found themselves 2-0 down at half-time but the game turned early on in the second half when Tom Scarlett made sure Ash Saunders’ shot crossed the line.
Wellington now had Bridgwater on the ropes and had opportunities to draw level. Unfortunately, the fourth goal of the game soon came for the visitors and from this moment the game seemed gone. Bridgwater were able to further extend their lead and finished 5-1 winners.
This was clearly a tough day at the office for the Tangerine Army but also perhaps a glimpse of next season.
With both Wembdon and Staplegrove dropping points, the A team stay a clear second in the table and promotion remains a great possibility.
Thoughts will now very much turn to the Seward Cup semi-final on Wednesday, February 5th, against Staplegrove Spartans.
