Somerset County Women’s League: Wellington 1, Ash Rangers 0
Payback was on the mind of our Ladies this week as they set up against Ash Rangers for the second time this season after Ash had got the better of them in the reverse fixture.
The in-form Wellington side continued their high pressing game from the start and it paid off almost immediately. After ten minutes, Jess Regan broke free from the Ash Rangers back line and smashed the ball past the visitor’s keeper, claiming her second goal in two games and Wellington’s tenth in three games.
Wellington were pushing for a second and Kenzie Norman attempted to break through for a one-on-one opportunity only to be brought down by the last defender. Both teams were expecting to see a dismissal after the challenge but the Ash Rangers defender was lucky to only see a yellow card.
The second half was quieter in terms of goals, but still brought excitement in terms of chances and physicality. Throughout the half, Ash Rangers showed their frustration trying to get through the resilient Wellington defence, but an excellent team effort with strong individual performances kept the visitors’ attempts at bay and Wellington walked away with all three points.
Everyone wearing tangerine deserved player-of-the-match but Katy Hussey claimed this weekend’s prize after a solid performance as she returned to the side at right-back.
With one game left before the Christmas break, Wellington sit as league leaders and face off against Wells City next weekend as they hope to get three points to make it five wins from the past five games.
