Toolstation League premier division: Wellington 1, Saltash United 2

A goal 12 minutes from time robbed Wellington of the draw their performance deserved as Saltash United returned to the Playing Field after a long absence.

It was another case of what might have been with Tim Legg’s side creating the better chances only to finish empty handed.

Wellington were without Jordan Casey and Harry Walford from the FA Vase defeat at Buckland while Scott Merritt dropped down to the bench as in came Douglas Camilo, Tom Stone and Nathan Byrne.

They opted to play with three at the back and got off to a confident start, taking the lead after 16 minutes.

Skipper Glen Wright exchanged passes with Miles Quick and, when his low drive was parried by keeper Oliver Sidey, Byrne pounced to net from a narrow angle.

Saltash, who have got off to a promising start since re-joining the league this season, came to life after falling behind and equalised after 26 minutes.

Finlay Harrison ghosted in at the far post where the ball was smothered but it came out to Sam Hughes, who knocked it into an empty net.

Wellington almost regained the lead within a few minutes when Camilo played in Miles Quick but the midfielder dragged his shot wide of the target.

It was nip-and-tuck after the break but the home side went close on several occasions, the clearest chance seeing Jake Quick head wide from a good position.

And Saltash struck the killer blow after 78 minutes as the ball came out to Sam Leary and he fired into the top corner from 20 yards.
