Somerset County Women’s League: Wellington 0, Wells City 2

Our Ladies faced their toughest challenge of the season as they faced Wells City in a highly-anticipated top-of-the-table clash.

As the teams got going, it was Wellington who started stronger with a few drives down both wings, but there was simply no one to receive the attempted crosses from wingers Zoe Armitage and Chan Bowle.

After the first drinks break, Wellington uncharacteristically started to show some weakness in their back line and a couple of individual mistakes led to Wells City poking home their first of the afternoon just before half-time.

After a tough team talk during the break, Wellington began to challenge Wells but the away side kept their composure and neutralised all attempts thrown at them.

With Wellington on all-out attack, they were left open at the back and another series of individual mistakes allowed Wells another chance and they doubled their lead. Two behind, Wellington had a hill to climb and Wells confidently saw the rest of the game out to claim all three points.

After the result, Wellington dropped to second place in the league, two points behind Wells, however the Tangerines are due to visit Wells in the last game of the season with the hope of getting revenge.

On Sunday, Wellington start their League Cup campaign at home to Pen Mill Reserves.
